BBC News FBI arrests Silk Road drugs site suspect

    Attachment 28137
The FBI has announced the arrest of
the suspected operator of the Silk Road - a clandestine online marketplace for
    drugs and other illegal items.

A spokeswoman said that Ross William Ulbricht was arrested "without incident"
by its agents at a public library in San Francisco on Tuesday.

She added he had been charged with conspiracy to traffic narcotics.

The FBI said it has also seized approximately $3.6m (£2.2m) worth of bitcoins
    - a virtual currency.

The agency described it as the biggest Bitcoin seizure to date.

The Silk Road is now offline - those trying to access it are presented with a
notice saying the site has been seized. Users had previously been able to access
the service through Tor - an anonymous web browsing system that requires special
    software.

Mr Ulbricht made an initial appearance at San Francisco federal court where a
bail hearing was set for Friday.

In addition to the narcotics trafficking allegation he also faces charges of
computer hacking conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy, according to court
    filings.

Interesting that they found the bloke.

Pretty sure the last time I was scouring the dark web, there are other such "markets"

This will be a cat and mouse. This place had a rating system, not sure about any others. I'd love to have had a look and seen it.

I heard on the news, and this kind of thing is specualitve, that 45 million was made in two years. Even if it is a fraction of that, why would you not quite while ahead?

Cant believe it was so easy to find him and cannot believe the FBI and NSA didnt use googles search function before using a custom search based on dates, would have to start somewhere on the web.

Would deffo say must be more than 45 million when you look at the fees they were charging when they were the first and only, fees slightly come down when BMR and others shot up. One thing I am surprised at is the way they released how they found him, you would have thought they said that they have a way into tracking people down on the TOR network to scare the other owners shitless. Maybe that is a double bluff though.

There are far more sites out there than that though, everything from cards, porn probably terror comms everything, you just need the onion link

I've never used tor, but just wondering, how do you get the onion links? Is there a tor equivalent of google or do you have to spend a lot of time looking / get invited?

There is a search engine of sorts and a place for links, other specialist where people dont want to be found would be shared by invite and person to person I would assume. These are likely to be kiddie shit and the like I would have thought

I was looking at the TOR options on the torrent downloader I use. But seemed a bit of a faf and slow in comparison.

It is not all that, TOR is for the anonymity, anonymity is normally used because people dont want to be found out for stuff, you go from one extreme downloading torrents, to the other end of the spectrum. I am only making an assumption based on my statement but seems logical though? especially when you consider some of the content like BMR or Silk Road stuff like that is bound to be there

Yeah, overall after looking into it, all be it briefly, I thought it was not worth the effort.

I am interested in the workings though, it is providing a good read. But I am by no means about to go dark.

I never had much of a look at darkweb before but just a brief look now and what I see is very worrying lol, if it were on the usual web you'd expect it to be a joke site but as it isn't you never know...

There are other marketplaces similar to Silk Road, and i'm sure now a load of new ones will pop up too. The other big marketplace still has an armoury section. Also LOADS of scammers on tor, some of the wiki directories are full of scammers, looked at it a bit a while back and you can literally buy anything, assassins, hackers etc, quite worrying how easily accessable this stuff is. Now it's so publicised everyone will be jumping on tor to have a look and will open the place to a whole load of new scammers. I never purchased anything there, a friend wanted to sell some stuff there but apparently its not straight forward to get your money out of bitcoin anonymously.
