Android How to force 2g whilst on home wifi ?

    Hi all,

I've recently moved network to vodafone as I had no signal at home with three and kept missing texts/calls.

Now I have a peculiar problem in that I have a very strong 2G signal and a weak 3G signal.

As the phone options are 3G(preferred) then 2G it's forever dropping the 2G signal in favour of the 3G signal which it acquires fine but occasionally drops and then returns to the 2G one.

Since I'm at home and have internet - a - plenty on my home WiFi I have no need of the 3G signal.

What is the simplest/easiest/best way of automatically forcing 2G when I am on my home Wifi ONLY then returning to 3G/2G when out and about ?

I know the instant reaction is it's something tasker would probably do but I think that's like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut.

I have an Xperia Z1 which is on 4.2.2 and rooted.

    What do people suggest ?

    Many thanks,

    malty

    Android...?

I have an app called MyProfiles and you can make it do things based on time, location, and by selecting profiles.
When i get to work mine turns off 3g and uses wifi. You record what signal masts are around so it knows where you are, or you can use a map i think.

Worth the £1 i spent on it i think.

I use it also to turn of the mobile web and wifi at night so when it is charging on the bedside table at night i do not get FB notifications or emails but the texts and calls get through.

    2 Thanks given to crashtestmac

Tried myprofiles trial and it doesn't appear to do any switching of 2g/3g etc just data on/off.

Also tried the tasker trial and that doesn't support radio switching on this particular handset.

I'll keep looking but still after suggestions if anyone has any

    Cheers

    no

    2g has sms/calls/data as does 3g

I can force 2g manually by selecting "GSM only" in the mobile networks section of the settings, I just wanted something to make it automatic when I got home and would automatically switch it back to 3G when out and about.

The only reason I want to force 2G is because the 2G signal at my house is far stronger than the 3G but because 3G is considered "preferred" it tries to use it even if it's 1 bar.

    cheers,

    malty

I might actually have a different solution for you mate - I've just literally today had my number PAC'd over the opposite way from Vodafone to Three for the same reasons you've gone the other way.

I have a Vodafone Suresignal here if you're after one of those - basically if you've not seen them they're what's called a Femtocell which connects over your broadband connection to Vodafone and you basically run a 3G cell in your house.

Any device which is 3G can be configured to go over the Suresignal so you get a great 3G signal all the time, although they reckon they can't tell the difference so any 3G / calls made are still billed to you as they normally would be.

If you fancy it let me know and you can have it for cheap?

It's a V1 mate and has a different PSU - the standard ones let go after a couple of years and so they just sit there rebooting constantly, so I swapped it over.

I'm just trying to deregister it though - Three did the transfer earlier today and I'm struggling on the website - it needs to be deregistered otherwise it's as much use as a chocolate fireguard!

They're going for 50ish on eGay, so how does £30 delivered sound, but only if I can deregister it as don't want to sell you something you can't use.

Settings -> More Settings -> Mobile Networks -> Network Mode

    GSM/WCDMA(AutoMode) = Use either 2G or 3G
    GSM Only = 2G
    WCDMA only = 3G

    Select accordingly.

    --edit
Didn't read you wanted this to happen automatically. My bad.

The price is perfect mate let me know how you get on. As long as I get a reliable signal I don't care what version it is.

I know I can change it manually, I want something that will do it automatically. Such an app must exist! Might look into nfc tags

Right mate I've just got off the blower to them and it's now deregistered and can be re-registered in 24 hours, so actually I might as well be cheeky now!

I know it's not going to Rap but instead of paying anything could you just give me VIP status please (I know you can't subscribe at the minute) and I'll pop it in the post to you?

I'll ask in the staff forum how I would go about this, I wouldn't just make you up without a discussion but sounds spot on.
