Default advice on strength training for 13 yo

my youngest plays rugby and is wanting to improve his strength as well as fitness. he is only small for his age but he doesnt care how big they are he will have a go. Just now as they seem to get bigger he isnt keeping up and now needs to get a bit stronger to help him out.

What advice could i get to help him ie weight training and diets

IMO hes far to young to be doing any form of heavy lifting!!

His skeleton is still developing and could be damaged by hard weight training......most PTs worth their salt would entertain doing anything like this until he is 16.

Like nibb said, although nothing stopping him doing bodyweight resistant excercises, press ups and chin ups etc...

so best just to run him through the basic stuff then and just have him carry on eating as normal?

Ill let him know that 16s the earliest to start any weights.

    Thanks.

What's the family genetics like regarding height etc. mate? if it's 'normal' he'll more than likely go through a growth spurt as he gets a bit older, I know my lad did when he was 12 - in a few months he shot up at a silly rate for a while. Resistance training/ weights etc. could actually stunt that as well as mess his frame up in the longer term.

I'd say maybe look to improve cardiovascular and eat everything in moderation and by everything I mean a healthy balanced diet without going over the top on anything specific.

    Thanks to burner1

im not tall and neither is the wife but on my mums side they are around the 6 foot odd mark.

My older 2 lads was small until they hit 13 - 14 then they shot up. my 15 year old is taller than me. ive also seen little un as grown about 5 inch this year but is still one of the smallest on the team. (wouldnt think it if you watched him playing though)

Time will tell I guess mate. End of the day, all you can do is what you do - encourage him and let him know he's doing great regardless of anything that seems to be an 'obstacle' currently... last thing you'd want is the little fella to get a complex.

To add to the above, as well as bodyweight exercises, also get him doing hill sprints.

As he doesn't yet have the Mass, and won't until his natural growth spurts, then with extra acceleration he will still hit as hard as the big lads (in theory). Besides, I'm sure it'll build character.

we do have them on the hill a couple of times a year to see where the lads are up to on fitness. nothing too demanding but enough to make sure they know they had a good workout.

Gonna just get him working on the push ups etc and make sure he understands what a balanced diet does for him.

Simply make sure he is eating the right foods to get his body up to spec. You have to sort out his diet and make sure he is eating well.

    Thanks to Mickey
