Question PC\ Iphone\ ipad homemade backup server request

right chaps, had a few friends and customers after data loss /recovery along with running disc backups asking about any other solutions for them

now originally i was going to make a film server of my n54l, but this got me thinking offering this is a service instead.

    my questions are

    1) do any of you already do this, what programs/apps do you use ?
    2) am i better off reselling a cloud solution to them ? if so any recs ?
    3) can i sync all the required idevice data just like icloud
    4) how strong a broadband conn will i need, myupload is pretty poor

i would imagine the software will need to handle multiple secure logins for the users

and any other tips or advice appreciated

Do you mean what apps to use to make the backup? I would imagine iTunes is best unless you want to SSH in and do a full copy of the raw contents.

I am a Vault Services reseller, I really like them, their support team get back to you and they develop new features that you suggest if they are deemed to be good ideas. You select the directories to be backed up, you can set versioning and archiving as well as exclusions etc. There is a sync folder that works like Dropbox too and the client can be installed onto several machines all using the same cloud account.

Not sure what you mean here, what required data and how do you want it to sync? Do you mean having a cloud backup app on the phone itself which backs their stuff up?

iPhone backups are often pretty large, in the GBs rather than MBs, with a slow upload this could take a very long time.

You could encrypt a N54l with a RAID5 array, backup their stuff to that and if you wanted to have a cloud service running on there so you are completely covered. You would want a subscription from the clients though rather than a one off if you are using cloud as you will have a monthly fee yourself. Or you could buy a block of storage but I don't know if those are any good...

    Thanks to evilsatan

    along the right track bud

multiple clients being able to sync back up there iphone (photos, contacts, email) yeah on iphone GB's (potentially 64gb on current models) a current app would be able to handle this id imagine ? and also backup there personal docs and pics to the same allocated folder on the server ?

like dropbox and others id imagine them need say 25gb-50gb-100gb

agree about monthly fee, by thats also why though about reselling along with my upload speed , do vault services handle idevices backups also ?

PM me some ideas on costs if poss mate

I've just setup an 'owncloud' server.

Sounds like it will do exactly what you need. I've not actually played around with it yet though. Has windows, Linux and Mac clients for PCs plus iPhone and Android apps too.

I'll PM you test account details so you can have a nosey.

    Yeah no worries mate.

I've just installed the Windows client, works exactly like Dropbox from what it seems. It creates a %USERPROFILE%\owncloud folder and syncs everything you put in it.

I've got it backing up the important stuff on laptop by symlinking folders ie.

    mklink /d %USERPROFILE%\Documents %USERPROFILE%\owncloud\Documents
    mklink /d %USERPROFILE%\Downloads %USERPROFILE%\owncloud\Downloads
    mklink /d %USERPROFILE%\Favourites%USERPROFILE%\owncloud\Favourites
    mklink /d %USERPROFILE%\Pictures %USERPROFILE%\owncloud\Pictures
    mklink /d %USERPROFILE%\Videos %USERPROFILE%\owncloud\Videos
    ...and even
    mklink /d %USERPROFILE%\Dropbox %USERPROFILE%\owncloud\Dropbox

So now all my laptop's important folders and also dropbox stuff is synced to my NAS (my NAS already syncs directly with Dropbox, but hey, nothing like backups of backups of the really important stuff!)

EDIT: Hmmm, just reading the iPhone app reviews though and they don't sound promising.
