Rant Why are customers so daft?

2 weeks ago a customer emailed me saying her 23" iMac had got the grey screen of death.

An hour later (before i had a chance to reply to her) i get another email from her saying it's all ok, she changed the batteries in the keyboard and it's all working fine.

So i replied saying the grey screen is BAAAD and that I was sure she had all her data backed up, but if not suggested going to do it immediately. I heard nothing back...until today...she emails me saying it won't start up at all and permanently grey screen, oh and she hadn't got round to backing up her data. She had two weeks to do it FFS.

'Can i get her data back please?'

I'm seeing more and more Mac users coming completely unstuck because they think their shiney mac is the dog's danglies and is indestructible! Obviously i'm seeing more macs than i used to due to their popularity but i've also had two macbook pros killed by people spilling coffee on them this month and not backed up. This isn't a mac user rant but most of my pc users seem to have their data backed up now.

    ARGHHH!!

Depends on the cause of the Grey Screen. If it's a corrupt hard drive. Probably not.
    If it's something minor. Probably.

Only real way to find out, is to tell the customer its gonna cost her (for being an ignorant 'Fucking Idiot') and there is no guarantee it's recoverable.
Get the system to you and then investigate the problem. Grey screen can be caused by loads of different things, but attempting recovery mode would be the first step.

Then a SMC Reset and see what happens.

Don't know why your complaining - if your customers were switched on you wouldn't have them as customers.

Sorry, deja, wasn't asking the question myself, but thanks for the input.

I'm always pedantic. But on this occassion, I was being facetious as well.

The flip of that is when your customers don't see they are the cause of problems through their own laziness or lack of understanding but blame you instead. Usual one is if I go out and resolve an issue, then a little while later they have another issue (totally unrelated) they harp on about it 'not being like that before you came out the last time'.

    Not wrong there burner.

You do an optimisation / clean up on a vista pc and a day later they call up saying that Internet explorer has lost all their tool bars. The very same tool bars that slow the browser down and hi-jack the search engines etc.

I'm no fan of Vista mate lol. Had a lappy in the other week, running pig slow etc. Checked resources etc. and vista indexing service is hammering the HDD and CPU to the max most the time. Disabled that service as a compromise and removed near on 200 threats and web hijacks with malwarebytes and it was sweet.

Customer phoned me next day saying they couldn't connect to the net with their wifi, it was asking for some sort of password and hadn't done that before... I hadn't touched that part of the system and after a lengthy conversation it turns out they were at a mates house and had never connected to the net there before... I said it's probably down to their mates encryption and they need to know the password... ''what's encryption?'' came the reply.

    Thanks to burner1

No excuse for it when macs come with Time Machine which is simple to use and can run in the background backing up everything to an external drive.

Funnily enough, I had a Vista laptop in running slow as well last week. I resent farting about with Vista.

My recommendation to this customer though in summary was stop fucking eating at your laptop. It took me half an hour to de-skank the fucking thing before I could even touch it. Dirty bastards.

    Thanks to Zoots

It still amazes me that people don't spend a little time learning even the basics of computing considering how much tech people are getting these days. Most issues are often solvable with some simple reading.
