    Question Windows 7 Free Upgrade

Ok, ages ago, when I bought my Vista Machine, it came with free win7 upgrade.

when this came out, I had an e-mail, replied via form and got a disk.

I cant find it anywhere, nor the e-mail.

Is there any known way of resurrecting this and getting another copy?

I got my laptop some 4+ years ago I think.

    cheers.....Q

I am not certain but I think those laptops that were eligible for a free upgrade to Win 7 had a SLIC 2.1 table in the BIOS so all you need to do is install the correct 2.1 certificate and key and you will have permanent activation. Were you sent a product key? You should be able to download windows 7 from the links I posted in the sticky, install, skip entering the key and then do the above for a genuine activation. Only difference is you are doing a clean install then adding the certificate and key whereas that disc would have had it slipstreamed on likely along with other crap you don't want.

From what I vaguely recall, the key was on the disk.

I can research some of the terminology you use and see if that is applicable to my machine.

Download SLIC Toolkit and run it as administrator, go to the Advanced tab and let me know what it says in the top section under 'Version'.

On the advanced tab there should be a small box that says version and in it would say 2.0 or 2.1. It may have funny characters in it but unlikely. Can you let me know what yours says?

Slic 2.0 Table. Vista only. The upgrades were key specific and supplied by the manufacturer under licence from Microsoft iirc.
There are easy enough ways around it though.

Grab a copy of Windows 7 RTM and find a modified BIOS version for your laptop. Install it all and run it against Daz's Loader.
Then disable/hide Update KB971033 (just in case).

Worked out it's a VIAO, but what model? I'll help get a Slic Modded BIOS for you lappy if you need it.

Generally speaking once a valid SLIC 2.1 table is in the bios (e.g. Laptop came with win 7 but I do a clean OS install and can't use the key in the coa) I just manually install the correct certificate and volume key for the coa and its activated, no need to disable any updates or run any tools. I guess the tool just loads the cert and key automatically though?

you should be able to find a pre-modified bios, if not modding your own isnt hard but make sure you read up in it and take your time as a fuck up could result in a bricked board!

It is a Viao, will write what model later. See below, I don’t think this is within my abilities.

I have to be honest, this all sounds a little above my Paygrade of Duplo Lego ability.

I am going to scour the house for that disk again. It is in one of those safe places and that’s got to be easier than the above. Why is it so hard to be legit!

There is probably a pre-modified BIOS out there so all you have to do is run a file and it will add the SLIC for you, then just run two lines of simple code in command and you should be activated. It's only trickier if you have to mod the BIOS yourself as there are different methods for different BIOS and it's risky experimenting.

I had the exact same problem. Got a Vaio AW11S/B myself and I lost my upgrade disk. I just used the "Normal" method in Windows 7 Loader and it worked. Been using that build for a few years now.
