    Default Intel or AMD

Not bought a Laptop for years and personal preference would be Intel.
I have however agreed to help out a mate. He has just started on the Rigs and needs a new laptop to play Football Manager and watch porn when he is away. He has a budget of around £350

eBuyer keep sending mailers for AMD laptops but I have no idea what the A4 chips are like or any other variations.
I have done some Googling but wanted to know the personal preference on here.

This is one on ebuyer today with Touch Screen, Microsoft Office etc...

You can all try, but you will not get this guy on anything but Windows. Old dog new tricks etc...

I'd go for Intel out of ignorance because I find the AMD processor names confusing.

I'd also stick with Windows, I don't know why you'd want to get him on a different operating system, does he not phone you enough?

Look at refurbs from Dell Outlet and PCWorld.

    Thanks to Mule

Regarding the OS, I know a few people on here that would say it is the better option etc... My mate just wants to play Football Manager and send emails.

I am already speaking to another mate more than I should be at the moment as he has jumped to Mac

    Intel.

I'm sure I read something where AMD themselves admitted they had no hope of even trying to keep up with the desktop/laptop CPU game anymore and would be concentrating on mobile phone/tablet CPU's instead. (I think someone should point out to AMD that market is already well spoken for).

AMD is just your budget stuff these days - your Intel stuff will usually be quicker at everything though, especially older apps which are single threaded.

You used to find that Intel were faster per core although AMD had more cores - although Intel have killed AMD at the efficiency of each core since Nehalem and are now almost neck and neck on core counts.

AMDs market is games machines these days.

On the flip side the AMD (ex ATI) GPUs wipe the floor with the Intel stuff although to be totally fair Intel only do embedded GPUs anyway, not £500 quid cards like AMD and Nvidia.

An i3 would do most things nicely - the i5s and i7s can be just stupidly quick!

    Thanks to reverend

I don't bother with AMD, just opt for intel and pay a bit more.

When it comes to laptops especially as above don't touch AMD.. every single laptop I have had with AMD within 2-3 years has been unusable due to overheating....

To be fair they run hotter by design (and draw more power) but over time with dust accumulation they tend to overheat other components in the laptop and themselves !!!!

    Thanks to macmilm

strange how things change, my first pc was pentium and it was ok but once i read about amd i always went with them. wasn't they supposed to run cooler and lower powered, anyway my last was an old amd fx but now i've jumped ship to the intel side. been quite impressed but did spend loads of time on here http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php trying to get an idea as to what i needed.

Just helped my father in law buy an Intel dual core CPU laptop with 8gb ddr3 ram and 750gig hard drive running windows 8 for £299 its a belta

amd are absolutely miles behind ,I'm sure there power consumption of there older cpu's used to be lower than intels equivalent but now Intel have the nack of lower power consumption cpu's for the laptop/mobile device
lower power consumption = longer battery life and less heat therefore quieter fan.

Intel for me every time. AMD run hotter and apart from other issues they are slower with disk operations and disk access times when compared to a similar spec Intel.

Regarding the choice of OS: Windows has come a long way in the last few years. Doesn't suffer with the slowing down over time like pre win7 versions. Something the server versions have never suffered with in my experience which is why I always preferred them until windows 7 became available. I had a windows 2000 system running for about five years and boot time and operating speeds seemed as good as they were when first installed. Same with a server 2008 installation I have had on one of my systems for about 4 years now. Used every day and loads installed on it and it still boots and runs great.

I have been running windows 7 on another system for a few years now and I can not fault it. I can't imaging a more stable and user friendly operating system. There is certainly nothing wrong with it that justifies spending twice as much on similar spec hardware to run a different operating system. (">
