Welcome to DF caziann.
IMPORTANT! - Please take a look a the welcome message you received when signing up and keep an eye on the rules in each section.
With TomTom's, once a route has been established, you should be able to go to Options, choose alternate and travel via.
Then select the preferred road from the map. Some models also offer a Avoid option.
But like MM states, memory is always far better and you shouldn't rely on a SatNav for every journey. I'm guessing you haven't been driving long either!?

If you have used the satnav directions to get you there why not use them on the way back as well?
In most cases will be the fastest route and will only differ slightly from the way you came.
Most new Satnavs will give you a choice of routes on the way back or you could just use your phone and mount it somewhere on the dashboard. Google navigation gives you a few options usually.
