I'm sure you should be able to recover the files from the memory stick if you can see data on there.

however as has been said get the original hdd out and connect it to a pc. I've got a docking station like this whichever akes it easier

    https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=al...w=1024&bih=672

    i got mine from eBay.
To recover data I always use 'get data back for ntfs'. I can up a copy somewhere if you want.

I've had varying success with many different file recovery programs. Some free ones, and some expensive ones. I think depending on the type of reovery you need to do affects which program is best. I've got 3 or 4 now in my "arsenal".

I used the one pegasus mentioned, ontracks offering. Also an EaseUS one, GetDataBack and R-Studio. Recuva is a free one, which is a bit shit, but it might recover your pictures quite easily.

Theres a guide here that might help you: http://www.digital-forums.com/showth...ORK-IN-PROCESS

Main thing is to pull the drive and caddy it up.

you say 3.8gb on the flash drive?, what size is the flash drive? do you have other files on the flash drive that you have put on it that you can read?,
it is possible if the flash drive is say 16gb and you can read the older files you have put on that the drive may be a fake(loads have been sold on fleebay 4 gb flashed to look like 16gb,32gb ect).
when you see the files on flash does the description of each file look like gobbledegook with numbers & little squares on them?, if so the flash drive is usually shot.
good luck, hope you get sorted

Best of luck mate. Bet you feel sick.

Any consolation or to set you in the right frame of mind - I formatted my pics hdd by accident. Took a long time with EaseUs Data Recovery but I got mostly everything back.

Yeah. As above I think we have all done stupid things in the past and lost data of some sort. I lost a hdd full of music a few years ago and I was almost physically sick.

Forunately I had shared a large amount with friends so got a lot back.

just be calm and try the suggested advice and see how u get on. So long as a lesson has been learned!

Learnt my lesson the hard way too. One of my very first customers a few years back asked me to do an Optimisation on his old xp PC.

Got it sorted perfectly apart from about 20mb (yes just 20mb) of unallocated space on a 500gb drive. So I thought I'd sort it but somehow formatted the wrong part of the drive. Turned it on and again felt physically sick when I realised I'd lost all his family photos. Cold sweats and panic. Luckily 'get databack' got everything back for me. Now very, very careful.

your not alone, I copied all my mates stuff to USB before formatting the HDD only to discover there was nothing on the USB key , remember to check and verify all data is there before getting rid of the source

Just thought I would mention, cut and paste alone isn't that bad. Infact, if the target drive can be trusted, this used to be my preferred method because I've lost count of how many times I've left a computer to copy a shitload of data only to come back and realise it gave up half way through and I have no idea when. Beauty of cut and paste is that you can see what didn't get moved.

However for a while I've been using robocopy to copy large batches of files because it never messes things up like normal windows copy.

However please note you can seriously mess up/lose data using this as well, best to test with some dummy data first.

Do it after you've removed it and got it in a caddy or attached to the pc. You don't have to use a caddy, you can just attach it to a sata or ide port on a desktop pc mobo if thats what your going to use.

    Few things...

    1. Creating a Disk Image of the HDD is not going to help in this situation IMO. Disk Imaging will only copy files that exist and will ignore any sector data that you'll need to read to get the files back - unless of course you are doing a Sector-by-Sector Drive clone?

    2. I'd have just run the GetDataBack straight away on the drive that had the files on it originally without transplanting it into another machine. Removing a drive and recovering things from it is only really necessary when the drive has failed - so you copy files from a failing/failed drive to one that's not.

    3. Why da heck you waited so long to do it? I'd have been doing it instantly.

    4. You'll be surprised how easy it actually is.

    --edit
TeamViewer was just a Windows option. VNC is also a good one.

I'd plug the drive in direct to the mobo. Takes long enough to scan for files over a data connection, never mind USB.

Also I've used disk partitioning software that has very limited features when used on Scsi compared with IDE so the method of connection can also affect things when attempting to talk to to a drive at this level

Not so sure TBH. In some cases, some file viewers maybe able to see part of the picture, in which case you can grab it, maybe crop it and save a memory.

I've had part recovered jpegs where a section at the bottom is garbage.
