iphone / itunes ringtones??

Guys

is it possible to use songs from your itunes library as ringtones on your iphone, if they have NOT been bought through the itunes store.
A friend has asked me, I've googled and there doesnt seem to be any specific answer on whether they need to be genuine itunes downloads or imported music from your harddrive.

jees. do you really need to go to sucj lengths just to get a song as a ringtone? I know I couldnt be arsed with all that. But I shall forward the info to my friend for digestion.

would it not be easier to convert from mp3 to m4r, then import that m4r to itunes like a normal song?
that seems easier to do..

just thinking out oud there.

Or download from zedge.net and it's already in that format for iTunes.

Oh and once you get the hang of it its a 2 min job at the most!!

you can you iringer to create the ringtone from any music , then the app normally throws it into itunes. once you sync you have the files on your phone.
