I've been searching high and low for a really good banana milkshake recipe for ages. Out shopping I stopped at a coffee shop and saw a "cheeta shake" (their version of a banana milkshake) I watched carefully how it was made and then started experimenting myself to try and reproduce it, as it tasted fantastic and this is what I came up with
We all know that a true milkshake has ice cream, otherwise it's just banana flavoured milk, but for the slightly more health conscious of us (I say slightly because you need sugar in this) then this recipe hits the spot.
You'll need:
Ripe banana's (the spottier the better: more spots on the skin = sweeter)
milk (I used semi skimmed)
2 cups sugar (next time I'm going to use splenda and see how that goes)
3 cups water
2 vanilla pods (or vanilla extract but not one with alcohol in it)
Freezer
blender.
Peel and chop the banana's into inch thick chunks, put them in a bag and freeze them a day before you need them for this.
To make vanilla syrup
in a milk saucepan, bring the water to boil and add the sugar, stirring until it dissolves
once dissolved, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer
Split the vanilla pods with a sharp knife and scrape out the pulp.
Put the pulp. plus the pod skins into the sugar water and bring back to a simmer for 3 minutes.
bring the mixture to a boil for 5 minutes - you're looking to reduce and slightly thicken the mix.
Pass the mix through a sieve into a jug and allow to cool.
you now have your own vanilla syrup.
Take a handful of frozen banana chunks and 500ml of milk
then blitz in a blender to a thick(ish) consistency
add in a glug of the vanilla syrup and stir.
Pour and enjoy the goodness.
You can add more or less banana/milk and blend to a consistency you prefer if you want, but the vanilla syrup makes this amazing.
Enjoy!
