Default HP N54L server hard drives

    Hi
I love my proliant HP N54L and have used it as plex box and downloader as well as backing up my laptop there, i decided to upgrade to western digital red 3tb server drives, unfortunalty it seems it only sees up to 2 tb. Is there anything I can do, such as bios mods, to get it to see my new drives?
    many thanks

Which OS? In windows I would launch disk management and when asked to initialise select GPT as the partition type and it should work.

    Thanks to evilsatan

U know you can move the operating system drive up and into the CD Drive area and stick another 3tb drive in so you have 4 drives, I have then raided the 3x3tb ;-)

To run the operating system drive on the optical sata connection you need to run an update to the BIOS, a member on here helped me out with this even sending me the BIOS update file ;-)

    Thanks to akimba

You can also add another hard drive to the rear esata port I've got my operating system booting from that on an ssd

and have a 2 tb plugged in to the optical drive connector and then 4x 3tb drives in the slots

you can also run software from the internal USB port, so you could install FreeNAS on a memory stick and run from the USB port, then install 5 hdds (one in the optical drive space and 4 in the hdd bays)

    I have a 2.5 ssd and a 3.5 2tb in the optical bay, 2 x 3.5 drives will fit though.

How are you connecting the 2nd Drive as only 1 SATA to Optical Bay ain't there?

esata to sata cable from the back of the box and running past the clip that holds the PCI cards in place.

    Shocking bump

guys i finally sorted out ssd and few drives for server which has never been back on since putting the os on to the 250gb supplied drive !!

Now i want to use the n54l for the following

    • IP camera DVR (connected via gigabit switch on POE)
    • Backup - backing up all my Computers
    • Central File Server - Music, Movies, Photos, Documents
    • Possibly Central downloading, sab, couch etc

now will i benefit from put my ssd on to this for the OS as read that if server is on then not much benefit to be had, however becasue of the ip cameras i thought it might help or if those files are set to a data drive (4tb wd purple) then will it make no difference

its got ws2012e on if that makes a difference a 8gb memory

also presume i will be better to download large media to the playing device rather than try and stream if i have no dedicated Graphics card fitted to the n54l
