Noticed they are selling the Hewlett Packard G7 N54L AMD Turion 250GB MicroServer for £83.00 after cashback.

So what disks are people buying for their servers? A quick Google suggests WD 2tb Red. Didn't know that you had to buy different drives for nas boxes. Expensive for two though it's going to be £150 for two when ideally I'd want 3 in a raid5 set up.

well I initially put a 3tb seagate barracuda normal drives in it, due to being tight Scot and ignorance, lasted about 6 month before SMART errors etc. and it was always noisey. This time I put a couple of WD red 3TB in and they are totally silent, 3yrs warranty and great, but I was thinking of filling the last bay with a Seagate NAS drive 3tb when I save up some more £££

I gave up trying to get Server 2012 R2 on it...tried disabling the nic in the bios, which did allow the install to get past 83%, but when re-enabling the nic, the operating system then wouldnt boot.
Stuck 2008 R2 on it instead.

2012 essentials non r2 goes on without any issues. Got plex installed and seems to be working OK. Had to put it in the front room which isn't ideal as it's a tad too noisy for me. Lifted the carpet to run a network cable to the back room and it's ripped in half! Had to put it back as neat as I could hoping the Mrs won't notice! Seems to handle transcoding to a NowTV box really well.

I never got round to upgrading my 2012 one to R2 - probably for the best as that firmware wasn't about then!

There will probably still be the hacked versions floating around that enable extra functionality on the SATA connection to the top drive bay and the eSATA connection.

I ad a look at these again and notice still cash back and price drop comapred to when it all first starting being talked about. Furthre more, on the site, there was a hole host of cash back deals. Good to know it can take a while. EVen if i miss out, keen to get an order in this week, cheap enought for me to get one and play with now.
