Tech What OS for HP N54L?

    Hi guys,

Thought i ought to start a new thread rather than mixing up the threads in Biggy's.

So with the imminent arrival of my n54L i wondered what would be the best OS to run on it. Having never had a proper server before i'm keen to get it running properly. Are the Windows server editions available in the usual places. I'm used to running a synology NAS with a nice GUI.

Any tips or guidnace on how to get this set up nicely would be greatly appreciated. I saw in the other thread about a bios slic mod. I'm used to using a loader for win 7, and the skype activation for win 8.

    cheers

I'll run Server 2012 Standard on mine as I can run a couple of VM's in Hyper-V on that. Hoping to run Plex Media Server on it and stream to my NowTV boxes and also access network drives from XMBC as I prefer XBMC over Plex on my Revo.

I've been wondering what memory upgrades the new owners will get? 8GB seems quite expensive compared to the £30 for 8GB people were paying in May 2013. I've seen it for £80 in places. I'll probably stick with 2 2TB drives and the 250GB drive for the OS.

    Thanks to liveseytowers

That'll teach me to do a proper search - you could have put N54L in the title though!!! ;-)

I'm running home server 2011 and I also bought a copy of Stablebit Drivepool which allows me to pool the two 3tb drives into one but also create folders that I want duplicated on both drives for protecting important irreplaceable files and photos. This saves space by not duplicating everything as in a raid setup but gives me the same level of protection for important files. There are probably other ways to do this but I found this setup was the easiest for me. (">

I use Windows Server 2012 Standard, its from my MSDN subscription so cant comment on how well the loaders work, but it runs great with 2GB Ram, got this installed on my N40L and N54L, my other N54L should be here today or tomorrow and i will go for the same again, got 4x 2TB drives in 2 of the HP Microservers running a storage pool with a software raid 5, havent had any problems yet so not sure how good the recovery will be on the storage pool, the 3rd Microserver is going to be loaded with 4x 4TB drives

also got a ReadyNAS NV+ with 4x 2TB drives and i have had to replace a drive on that, it couldnt have been simpler, turn off, take old one out and put new one in, then wait, just hoping the Windows Server one is the same

No bios mod, stock ram and 2 wd 3Tb red drives. Old drives I had lying about until I can justify 2 more reds

That was supposed to be an edit, not new post. Lengths folk will goto to boost post count

I have been using server 2008 r2 but might format mine soon (or buy a n54l to replace my n40l) and try server 2012.

Home Server 2011 here does as says on the tin and pretty good at it too, I would deff upgrade the RAM to 8GB but Also I had to put a new 1GB network card in which I send all me media streaming down as the onboard only seems to do 100mb duplexed

Heads up for anyone in the same boat - just tried installing Win Server 2012 R2 and it kept hanging at 80% odd.

Disabled the on-board NIC, installed the OS fine and then enabled the NIC again.

Edit: OS does not boot when NIC is enabled again. Fun...

Looking at Google it seems this is an old problem so I'm sure there is an answer somewhere, lots of people posting additional NIC drivers to install etc.
