I need the help of the good faithful DF community for ideas please

I am about to start my final module project and it is on HCI, I am finding it difficult to think of a project I can do to move forward with it, I have tried looking for websites or systems with poor user interface, can you give me some ideas please?

I am thinking of doing a system or interface that has poor UI, but I am struggling to find one in this modern world to take it forward

Get yourself a Oculus rift dev kit. Virtual reality HCI/UI is still in it's infancy - plus it's cool and due to reach the mainstream very soon.

This has a terrible UI, but you will probably spend months learning how to use the system just in order to be able to describe how to improve it!

Does it have to be a website? The original Motorola razr had a notoriously shit uni (yes/no keys would change side of screen etc).

Have you thought about how you're going to make this quantative/measurable?

I would go for the obvious.

Microsoft spent about 30 million dollars creating Windows 8 (which only purpose seems to be so people like yourself can write about it).

Or indeed, you could pick on the x86 operating systems as a whole. Poor intuitive UI (W8 and Linux) Vs successful UI (OSX)... and how user experience on the same UI can be drastically different depending on hardware (i.e. Using W8 without a touch screen).

The basic popular rise of the touchscreen UI is a total subject in itself... Touch screen is great for Content Consumption but poor for Content Creation. It also questions the practicability and the law going forward. MS wants business to go touchscreen... its the future! ... and is great in some circumstances. However, imagine if everybody sat at desks were forced to wave there arm in the arm all day using laptop/desktop touch screens... there would be RSI all over the shop.... followed by legal claims.... followed no doubt by legal regulation (which interestingly has not yet caught up with the touch screen phenomena)

What about car dashboards / controls? Head up Displays etc?

iTunes and windows 8 I have been told no I cannot use as millions already use it ok, it needs to be a system or interface that can be improved..... I am getting slightly annoyed with it now if im honest

Come work with me for a week and I'm sure you'd be able to use any number of systems where I am...

Could you compare using an IDE such as eclipse (itself can be counter intuitive/awkward at points) to something like emacs/vim (both of which are still highly used and require arcane key combo/command knowledge)?

How about those touch-screen train ticket machines?
Sometimes they're are a right pain in the arse to navigate and find the appropriate ticket. Must be room for improving that system somewhere.

How about self checkouts at the supermarket. Trying to find items for weighing is a nightmare, go to M&S there's is particularly bad especially when trying to find the type of bread roll you have.
