Help xp & win 7 Dual Boot

    Brand New PC

    • AMD Quad-Core A10-6800K 4.1GHz
    • 8GB RAM + 2TB HDD
    • DVD Writer
    • AMD HD 8670D

this is the problem, windows 7 installs with no problems, updates & all drivers running great.
as soon as i try to install xp pro no matter what version inc home(200gb partition) as soon as the 1st step of getting install files ready it will BSD, every time,
i have also installed xp on its own with a full formatted drive and still BSD, did the same with a different hard drive

    pulling hair out with it.
i have made many dual boot systems with no problems, could it be the fact its new generation of hardware not compatible with xp?
    im just not sure,

I am betting it is the 0x7b BSOD? It is due to the SATA controller being set to AHCI rather than IDE/Compatibility. You can either slipstream the driver to XP so you can leave it as AHCI in the BIOS or change it in the BIOS.

Is there a reason why you want to dual boot rather than run a VM inside Windows 7? I used to dual boot but now I just run VMs.

    Thanks to evilsatan

i will check bios when i get to work in the morning,
the guy who wants it is in his 80's & just wants it simple selection on bootup.
i was trying to put him off but he would not have it, its some bits of software he needs to run..not sure what though.
i will be much happier when xp dies completely.

Fair enough, well just change the SATA controller to IDE/compatibility and you should be good to go. Might be worth posting the BSOD error code first though, I am expecting 0x7b.

I can't say I tried extensively, but I remember I could only get xp/7 to dual boot if I installed xp first on a drive that had only been used for XP, or had been totally wiped (inc boot sector). Once I had XP working, I would then install 7 on the other drive which would leave XP intact but make it unbootable. Used EasyBCD to resolve this.

    Thanks to Over Carl
