Default Router location & ADSL settings.

    Hi all,

I've recently moved the router from the bottom shelf of a glass cabinet in the corner or the room with all other AV closer to the phone socket and to make it look a little neater.

I've replaced the Microfilter and I only have the Router going into that, straight into the master socket.

You can see how the Router is positioned at the moment, and also the distance from my Laptop, also included are my Router settings etc, just wondered if everything looks OK and if there is anything else I can do to speed it up? I know it wont be that fast as it's ADSL shitty Sky and I live top floor in a flat, and we're not in a Fibre area, but may be in the next year or so.

This is my Router settings, is there anything I can do to change them to make it faster at all?

    My current speed:

    ANy thoughts at all?

Have you connected it over Ethernet and tested the speed?

No, not yet, I'll do that shortly and post up the results.

First thing I'm wondering is can it breathe? I'm guessing there are vents on the sides (or top and bottom as it's positioned), but with the bottom blocked, this will limit natural/passive convective cooling.

If it came with a stand to allow mounting like this, dig it out. Otherwise figure out a neat looking bodge to raise it an inch or two and allow airflow. (maybe Velcro to the surface on it's left?).

(It may sound anal, but last summer I ended up having to stick a fan right on these vents to keep my home router going).

As well as the above, it may be worth ticking the "enable auto channel scan" if you don't know what other channels are being used in your block.
This will select the best channel available based on how much the other channels are being used. Of course, if you know channel 2 is clear then stick with that.

Consider placing the router with the led's face down for a better signal. Your antenna is stuck towards the back of the cupboard, putting the router face down will bring the antenna further forward in your cupboard, may give you an extra 5% signal. Also, are you able to put it on a higher shelf?

Ok, thanks for that, I can position it anywhere really, there wasn't a stand with it as I think it's designed to sit horizontal with the ariel facing up. I'll have a move around and ensure vents are clear and also try with the below. Will post back!

Cheers mate, I don't know anything about channels, so I've selected the Auto Scan and see how we go on. The antenna is moveable wither left or right or back. I'll post a few pictures up of positions with the vents getting air, and you can recommend me which should work best

    Will post up shortly!

    Cheers

Ok, so connecting via Ethernet, Results:

    Equally as shit.

In terms of router positioning, the vents are on the top and bottom of the router, and the antenna is at the back of the unit and sticks up, you can move it left or right, or leave it sticking right up. In terms of signal strength, I've re ran the rest with the router basically in "open air" as the image below shows.

    Results:

Essentially this shows that it makes no different over WIFI or Ethernet or the position of the router.

So it puts it all down to from the Socket backwards which is out of my control.

Poor results with cable connected would suggest a low ADSL profile
is your router on 24/7 or do you switch it off at night ?

Run the http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ with your cable connected and post the results

Just noticed one point in the original post "I've replaced the Microfilter "

Where did the new one come from ? Worth swapping it back ?

If you're getting a slow response over ethernet I think that rules out the aerial which is what I thought it might be.

If you have any telephone extensions in the flat try removing the master socket faceplate and plug the router in behind there.

This will disconnect the extension wiring which can interfere with the ADSL signal.

You may have to run it like this for a few days to see any difference.

You can buy a face plate to do this, lots of info HERE

Reckon packet loss on the line , honestly would be calling BT , pingtest should show packet loss. Might be engineer visit to the exchange and a nice speed boost coming your way . Oh always leave the router on

Read up on ADSL bell wire. You can disconnect it and it's meant to give you faster speeds. It didn't for me tho! You can do it your self or you can buy adaptors that do it.

Have you run your details through Sam Knows to see what sort of figures you should expect?
