Help Sony xperia s no wifi problem

A relative of mine has a new Sony Xperia S but no Wifi.

The slider to switch it on just doesn't work.

Tried factory restore but know joy. I'm beginning to think it may be hardware rather than a setting somewhere.

Pic pinched from the net but the blue wifi slider doesn't work at all.

Supposedly, it's a Jellybean OTA update (nearly a year ago) that broke the Xperia S and a fix would have to be officially released from Sony via an update (haha) to repair it.
Contacting them, they will deny all knowledge of their fuck up in typical Sony style.

Some are saying that Restoring or re-installing is not working either so perhaps once the driver is updated for the wifi it cannot be replaced by the original.
CM10 via Root installation has worked for some - not recommended if you're considering the RTM route under the 24 month warranty.

kbaleo nails it in this thread -
Funny how support can only suggest a reboot and an upgrade. This bug is present since the phone came out, and so is the louzy solution presented.
Your wifi on this phone is unstable, unreliable and worthless.
Sony knows it but is not capable in fixing it.
Wifi reconnects randomly without any specific reason.
The wifi gets shutdown randomly, and the only thing to get it working again is rebooting the phone.
The phone reboots without any particular reason.
And of course updates from sony are a decade behind.
