    Popularity: An e-cigarette

Sales of e-cigarettes have risen 340% in a year, beating nicotine patches, lozenges and gum for the first time.
The total was up from £44million in 2012 to £193million in 2013, while sales of the traditional quit-smoking aids increased by just 1.7% to £131million.
A fifth of 16 to *24-year-olds felt peers who shunned tobacco may be tempted by e-cigarettes.
Analyst Mintel said youths could think it is a less harmful alternative.
Spokesperson Roshida Khanom said: “With the growing popularity of E-cigarettes, there is concern that young people may take up ‘vaping’ as a less harmful alternative to smoking.
“This concern has resulted in the Government announcement made in January 2014 that the sale of E-cigarettes to under-18s is to be made illegal.”
From 2016, under EU law expected to be rubber stamped in April , E-cigarettes will be regulated, moved to medicine counters and have be up front about what is in them.
Khanomadded: “A brand that can become the spearhead for this can distinguish itself in the market and win consumer confidence, as well as becoming the leading brand to be prescribed by the NHS.”
A third of people smoke and one in seven puff on up to 20 cigarettes a day.
Men are the heaviest smokers with almost twice as many getting through 20 or more cigarettes a day, compared with women.

This actually relates to a post I was going to make about the explosion of e-cig use I have noticed recently.

I've used one for about 18 months, and when I first had it I always got stared at when I used it and I was constantly having to explain it to people who saw me with it. I only saw about two or three other people with one during this time. Was this way for about a year.

About six months back people didn't stare so much and started to stop asking about it as people were learning what they were. Started seeing a few more people using them too.

Three months ago, definitely more of them appearing, and using an e-cig was beginning to not look odd anymore.

I was out and about yesterday, and fuck me, EVERYONE's got one! I swear I saw more e-cigs than I did real fags. Plus all different types - the shop bought ones, the Bet Gilroy ones with the long black battery, I even saw one guy with a silver one the size of a frickin' cannon, it was amazing, lol.

I can't believe how much their use has exploded, hopefully it will continue

Noticed in my little hick town last week a new shop appeared... 'The E-Cig Emporium'
Shows they must be gaining massively in popularity if you can have dedicated shops, not having to buy your fags from the off license

The slightly worrying thing is that the health effects of these are unproven

We may find that in many years to come, e-cigs may be blamed for other lung type illnesses

There just hasn't been enough research.

By then we will all have brain tumours from mobile phones and the lungs won't even get a look in.

Really strange to see the reappearance of smoking ads on the TV, smokers referred to as 'Vapers' something very SciFi about it all....
