So server 2012 on n54l now what?

So I'm new to this and thinking maybe I should have just stuck windows 8.1 on it to share media etc.

i have installed 2012 r2 all fine and running (still waiting on drives though) but what now?
what can I do with this other than install plex and share media?

Is this possible?
1. add some kind of auto backup of all the kids laptops to it
2. I would like to run iTunes to sync my phone over wifi via my ipad?
3. Can the kids have their own iTunes access so they can sync their own music separately?
4. Make some use of my Apple TV box and wd live tv box.
5. Host my own VPN so my parents can browse uk sites from Portugal.

all I have now is a 1tb mybook live which runs transmission and photo uploads etc from my iphone.
whats the next step or should I just stick windows 8 on it lol.

I have 2011 home server on mine and would also be interested in the options available, especially when it comes to backing up work from my other PC's. I have used Always Sync installed on each PC to manually back up new/modified files in the past but I would love a solution where the server would automatically search and back up new/modified files in a particular (MyWork) directory on my PC's and laptop which are also on the network. I suppose I could install Always Sync on the server and set the 'Backup From' locations to the various PC's, And schedule it for once a day or at night. Would need to be able to wake up sleeping machines though. Anyone tried something along these lines? (">

im a noob and really need some help here.
i have added a 1tb drive to it for testing and shared it but I can't access it from my ipad!

You can back up to the n54l using widows backup on the client pc's. Just select network location for the cal up.

Get plaex on the atv to stream all your media.

For backups and VPN add the Essentials role to the server. The other bits, I'm sorry I don't talk Apple so have no idea.

there should be an app so you can have your personal cloud, I know there is one for the readynas. Not sure on a name though.

My iTunes database is on my server so it's safe and accessible on any networked device, you don't need to install iTunes on the server, just move the database there. This doesn't work well over wifi (lag in iTunes) so I recommend doing this only if you have a wired connection on your client device.
