Is there any way of finding out the password so the lads at work can leech off the what is just a shop wi-fi?

There are a few programs but from when I looked into it they take days to run and must only be for WPA from memory?

Would love to know a definitive answer though.

Wireshark, Cain and Abel, Kali toolset - hackable if WEP but if WPA2, not much chance.

If it uses WPS then reaver could do it for you, I bought a Reaver Pro v2 but have only tested it on my BT homehubs and Draytek which it fails on but this could be because the Draytek is mid-range so may have the protection and BT push FW updates. The makers of it say if a manufacturer doesn't follow the standard it would also fail, not that impressed but need to try on more routers first.

For WEP there are loads of linux boot CDs that can do it, Backtrack with some scripts or I liked Beini for simplicity.

I think the only phone that could do that was the old nokia n900, I tried to get my brothers old one to have a go

You use the laptop to crack the key then use the key on anything.

Well I been trying reaver all week against several brands and have come to the conclusion that although its worked in the past, latest firmware to most routers has fix the exploit.
