Unwanted Overlay Adverts

I've got an annoying problem with my android phone. It's my first android phone, previously I had a couple of iPhones and never had this sort of problem.

I have been having things pop up unexpectedly. It first started to appear as a weather app "goo weather" which looked like an app tile but slightly larger. Last weekend I had a foaming beer glass appear (animated) and when I tried to move it or delete it the thing opened an advert for a crappy app. Since then I've noticed it even more. I have been thinking it was adverts from other apps but it seems to be an overlay. I can close the ads but want rid of the annoying things. Malwarebytes runs a check but doesn't finish its own process - current reviews of the malwarebytes app seem to reflect this as a current fault. I've tried a few antivirus apps too.

Can anyone help with this or point me in the direction of a good malware busting app?

Looks like you must have installed some advertising app somewhere along the lines.

I'd look at you list of installed apps in settings to see if there is anything there. Alternatively check all the reviews of apps you have installed to see if any reference the issue.

It's not that but thanks for the suggestion. It seems incredible but this crap seems to have come with the most recent (two) over-the-air updates from Elephone. I've just been reading their service forum and it apparently affects the P7000 and P8000. Seems like a ridiculous thing to include with an update. Commercial suicide, in fact.
