Wow, I certainly wasn't expecting it to impress me like it did, very solid build and premium quality interior. However what I liked most was the smooth auto box mated to the diesel engine.

Ordinarily I would never consider a Volvo because they just scream boring and 'not interested in cars', however this is perhaps a car I could live with.

On a separate note I took the A class 200 CDI (7 Speed dual clutch auto) for a drive and what a pile of shit. Jerky gear changes, laggy power delivery and a not very premium feel to some of the plastics. In its favour though were its very good looks and smart interior. I've got one more test drive with the A-class, this time a petrol auto 7 speed to see whether that fairs any better.

A 9 year old Focus made by the Chinese if you want to be precise.

I've actually always liked Volvos. I'm toying with the idea of getting an old school 850R estate later this year.

I've gone against my own rules and decided to go for a 2 Series, 2 door Beemer, its just stunning in the flesh and at a push can take 4 adults (albeit a short distance). I'm going for the range topping 225d (twin turbo derv) with 220 BHP and a respectable 6.1 sec to get to 60 mph, it should be a pocket rocket.

Fleet manager is being a cunt, he mentioned that a 2-series coupe wouldn't be ideal for carting colleagues around in (if ever I had to). So I've now sent him a dealer offer for a specced out S3 Sportback, a sleeper Porsche Slayer (0-60 = 4.9 secs) which still manages to return 41 mpg on the combined cycle. My only hesitation is how comfortable a 4cyl petrol engine will be on the daily highway commute. I'd hope it would cruise at 70 mph off turbo with fairly low revs.

P.S I do know the BMW M135i would be a better drive, but the S3 is a more practical, easier car to live with.

Mines a 2012 so the older shape S3 but I've never seen above 34mpg and that's when steady cruise speed, normal is more around the 25 mark. It's hardly ticking over at 70 in 6th

The new (8V) is supposed to be 20% more efficient, hence the 41 mpg combined figure.

Good choice, I wanted an S3 but settled for an A3 due to cost and insurance. Had mine remapped today to over 200bhp and it's a pocket rocket now.

Because I do high miles he may still block the S3 and push me towards the TDi.. To be honest the S line 184 bhp oil burner is no great hardship, especially since I could max it out with Quattro, Stronic, MMI navigation etc.. And still be within allowance.

So this is exactly what I've gone for, with delivery in September.

BMW 330d M-Sport Touring in Estoril blue with Panorama roof, Alcantara seats, 8 speed ZF auto gearbox, Harmon Kardon Stereo, adaptive suspension, variable sports steering and Prof Navigation w/internet (car has its own sim card).

The performance from the 3 litre diesel lump is nothing short of epic, 0 to 60 in 5.5 sec and a limited speed of 155 mph (which I will test in Germany).

As much as I like the 2 series, I need a proper grown up car that can not only cart around two kids, but also put a smile on my face when they've safely dismounted.

In my heart I still love hot hatches, and if I wasn't thinking with my head I would have gotten a 125d or even better a M135i.

I regularly take my company Jag XF V6 on the autobahn to clear out the tubes and its amazing how stable and quiet it is as the needle bumps off the 155 mph speed limiter.

Nice car, I could do with a sensible family estate, something like an S4 avant (or even better RS4 avant) but the beemer looks good. How did you push the fleet manager up to that, must be costing a fair bit more than the 2 series.

I would definitely have considered an Audi had it not been for the fact that the entire A4 range is due a major facelift in 2015. The current B8 platform dates back to 2008, which makes it very long in the tooth. With regards to the Beemer's price, it did spill way over budget (despite all my haggling and discounts) so I'll be paying the equivalent of about £200 extra per month, which is not too bad.
