More grunt, more power to overtake on the highway and tire shredding launches. And the clincher for me is how relaxed the car feels at motorway cruising speed, a diesel cruises effortlessly at 80 mph, and at lower rpm without the monotonous drone of the petrol. A bigger engined petrol car (e.g. 3.0) probably makes a better case for itself, but in the 1.4 to 2.0l category turbo diesel engined German cars are at the top of their game.

Are you travelling west to east on the M62?
That was a journey ,all be it the opposite way, I did for 3 years. About 20 years ago. I had a Peugeot 205 diesel, quite nippy even though no turbo and with a hefty boot at milnrow/shaw junction to ensure a speedy ride up the hill home

Diesels are still tanks. No matter the performance. It's a horrible oil burner.

Personally... Fuel costs don't bother me. A big engined petrol is worth every penny. I am still after a V8. Although I may choose to use a hybrid for my commute, possibly even a diesel. I'd just turn the radio up really loud so I couldn't hear it. The german diesels are a bit more refined. But they still sound like a van.

I did drive a German diesel for 4 years. So I remember the days of 600 miles to a tank. But... It's just a lot nice in a decent petrol engined car. If fuel costs were the same wouldn't you pick a 3L+ straight 6 or V6 over a 3L diesel?

I do agree with GTi's comments though. But a 1 Series is not a car for a real man.

I didn't agree with you about the diesel performance but agree about the comfort. I have a BMW 320D and a Honda Accord 2.0L and I have to agree that the Honda is a much quieter smoother car to drive. Have been considering selling one of them for about a year now but couldn't decide between quiet comfort and fuel economy. Performance isn't an issue for me and they are about the same anyway with the Honda being slightly better and also way ahead on reliability. Recently acquired a Peugeot 1.4 hdi which does 60mpg, £30/year tax and isn't too bad on the motorway for long journeys, so at the moment it looks like the BMW is going to be the redundant one. Will hang on to the Honda for towing a heavy trailer. (">
