    bit of an update...

Work is now "on schedule" if you can believe that. New plates are being moved and welded into place

they have started to remove the vibration dampners from the main engines....

and the re-conditioned cylinder heads for the main engines are now back...

Painting of the ship has commenced, here are some before and after shots...

a new ship would cost somewhere between 4-6million.

They would also lose a shedload of money if they took this ship off contract in order to get a new one built, which takes time. Time which this ship could spent on contract bringing the megabucks in ;-)

so not worth it in the end...

That's a really good point you make, its not like nipping down PCWorld and grabbing a new laptop. I'm glad you started this thread as I would never have realised how much work goes into a ships drydock MOT and glad to see we still have the skilled bodies here in UK to undertake the tasks required.

Does it have to undergo a sea worthy test after this or is the hull integrity intact through out the refit ?

because the bulkheads being replaced are internal, hull integrity is intact throughout (cough, cough).

in the middle picture, that is me looking down the wing ballast tank. I am only able to do this as there is a plate still to be welded on. The steel you see on the left (rusty) is the outer hull, suprisingly this has been certified as ok. The steel you see on the right is the inner hull and the 'wall' to the engine room if you like. This effectively makes up a ballast tank as picture below in my crappy diagram,

well my last update on this post. the trip has come to an end and i will be going home tomorrow... thank fuck!

been jam packed every day. not stopped and literally falling asleep in my cabin. engines are rebuilt, new bulkheads have been welded in, and a ton of other machinery overhauled and parts renewed, the ship has been painted and the funnels reconditioned.

Propellor shafts and props are still to come back so the ship will be in for another few weeks i think, not my problem though, the back to back crews problem now! haha.

Stunning end to a mad 28 days!

    Thanks to CallmeGoose
