    sad Frankie Knuckles RIP

Frankie Knuckles: House pioneer dies aged 59

The DJ, pictured here in 2007, played in London last Saturday night

Musician Frankie Knuckles, known as the Godfather of House music, has died unexpectedly, it has been announced.
A pioneer of house - the sparse, electronic dance music that emerged from Chicago in the 1980s - Knuckles was just 59.
He was known for remixing tracks by Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, as well as his own songs, such as Your Love and The Whistle Song.

His death was confirmed by fellow DJ David Morales on Twitter.
"I am devastated to write that my dear friend Frankie Knuckles has passed away today," [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. "Can't write anymore than this at the moment. I'm sorry."
Knuckles' longtime business partner, Frederick Dunson, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] he had "died unexpectedly this afternoon at home".
More details would be forthcoming on Tuesday, he added.
No reason has yet been given for his death but several music websites [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Knuckles had died of complications from Type 2 diabetes.
    'Art form'
Born in the Bronx, Frankie Warren Knuckles Jr learned his craft in New York City, where he was mentored by club DJ Larry Levan.
"We would spend entire afternoons working up ideas on how to present a record so that people would hear it in a new way and fall in love with it," Knuckles later recalled. "To us it was an art form."

Knuckles' style still influences club music today

He moved to Chicago in the 1970s, just as disco was dying out, and pioneered a style of extending soul and R&B records by adding drum machine loops.
"I would program different break beats and use them as segues between songs and additional beats," he said in 2011. "I had my own little piece of heaven right there."
He made his name at The Warehouse, a club in northern Chicago, predominantly patronised by gay men from the black and Latin-American communities.
"The people that used to hang out at The Warehouse coined the phrase 'House Music'," Knuckles said.
"At the time I was the only DJ in the city playing a sound that they heard nowhere else.
"So, when dance parties and regional DJs began popping up on the South Side of the city, to attract the same kind of audience that I had at The Warehouse.... they would advertise that they played 'House Music'."
By 1982, Knuckles had opened the his own venue for house music, called the Power Plant, where he premiered several tracks by local artist Jamie Principle, recorded on reel-to-reel tape.
The DJ helped secure a commercial release for several of those tracks - including [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and Baby Wants to Ride - which are recognised as the some of the earliest house classics.
Your Love is possibly better known in the UK as the backing track for The Source's hit remix of Candi Staton's [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Chicago named a street in the DJ's honour in 2004

Knuckles also produced the house anthem Tears with Robert Owens, and began his remixing career with a version of First Choice's Let No Man Put Asunder.
He later signed to Virgin Records, where he remixed or produced such artists as Mary J Blige, Janet Jackson, Pet Shop Boys, Diana Ross, Luther Vandross and Toni Braxton, and won a Grammy for best remixer of the year in 1997.
Inducted to the Dance Music Hall of Fame in 2005, Knuckles also had a Chicago street named after him in 2004, on the former site of the Warehouse club.
BBC Radio 1's Pete Tong was among those paying tribute to the star on Twitter, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]: "RIP gentleman genius, groundbreaker, inspiration. Blessed to have worked with you."
"I can't begin to count the ways he influenced me but I will never forget," [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Roger Sanchez.
"Frankie Knuckles was so under-appreciated," [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], leader of hip-hop group The Roots. "He was the DJ that DJs aspired to be."
The star had been as busy as ever in the run-up to his death, playing London's Ministry of Sound on Saturday night.
His [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] listed several upcoming dates over the next few months.

    Legend gone.

The worst thing about Frankie Knuckles was the raping of his masterpiece by that clowns cock Candi Statton.

RIP big lad, you were an inspiration to my formative years.

The legend that is Candi Staton never raped anyone. I believe the 'You Got The Love' track you are referring to, was created by The Source, originally using 'Your Love' by Jamie Principle and Candi's vocals.

I remember seeing Mr Knuckles at the now long forgotten Club UK many moons ago. Great times and a great man.

I know it was principle and I know who ruined the track but state the actual artist and most folk wouldn't know em. And let's face it the track is still shite and a poor relation to the original that made it big for them.

I have to disagree. I think The Source ft Candi Statton brought this track back to life in terms of opening peoples ears to the original.
However, having it as the last song on Sex in the City was a negative but if you want to talk about someone killing the track then it has to be Florence and her Screaming machine.

No. Flo ruined what was a bad track anyway but in many ways made The Source' track better than it was by showing how piss poorly done it could have been.

A little bit of history about 'You got the love'/'Your Love' as some people seem to be a little confused. Here are the facts, as for as I know to be true.

In 1982 Electra released 'Feels Good'

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

In 1984 Jamie Principle produced a demo of a tune called 'Your Love'.

In 1986 Candi Staton released 'You got the love'.

In 1986 Jamie Principle releases 'Your Love' remixed by John (The Source) Truelove and incorporating the 1982 Electra track.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

In 1987 Frankie Knuckles remixes the 1986 version of Jamie Principle's 'Your Love'. It was then re released in 1989.

In 1989 John (The Source) Truelove remixed the 1987 version of 'Your love', removing the vocal and replacing it with Candi Staton's vocal.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

The track was remixed and re released in 1991.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

By far the most popular version, which all the cool music hipsters criticize, is the 1996 Voyager remix.

I think all of the above have there merits but are very different animals. The shining light amongst them all is Electra's 'Feels Good' bass line and Candi's vocals.

Florence's version almost completes the circle. In contrast to most hardcore house and garage fans the original Electra and Principle tracks were popular amongst the tight jeaned, black eye liner and big hair community. Florence has commented that her version is homage to the Knuckes/Source track but it sounds like a cover of Candi's masterpiece to me.
