    Advice Re: problem on startup

You may have downloaded some free software that has bundled Conduit's web "services" as part of the installation. Typically, the outcome is a new toolbar installed in your browser, and also your search engine and/or home page settings being changed. You can try using AdwCleaner to clean up this problem for you - simply download, close all browsers that are running, run, scan, and clean once complete.

    Thanks to drdude

You've been infected with Conduit which is an annoying program.

    Download Rkill from BleepingComputer
    Ccleaner from ccleaner.com
    Malwarebytes Free from malwarebytes.org

Once downloaded don't install anything, right click Rkill and select run as administrator. Once that completes install CCleaner and go to the Tools tab, then remove anything that looks suspect from the uninstallation section. Tip: Sort the items by date, that way when you find a dodgy app (such as conduit) you can see what else it may have installed with it. If you get an error with any removal then download Revo uninstaller and remove using that making sure to delete all files and reg entries it finds.

Once you think you have removed all nasties switch back to the cleaner tab and click Run Cleaner. Once finished switch to the Registry tab and select scan, then clean registry. Make sure you make a backup when asked.

Now open your web browsers and navigate to the add-ons/extensions section, disable/remove anything you find that is from a dodgy program. Switch to the search providers and remove any that you don't trust.

Now install Malwarebytes and run a scan, this should clean up the infected files for you.

Reboot the machine, run Rkill as administrator again, run CCleaner, switch to tools, Startup, disable any dodgy looking entries in ALL tabs in this section.

Reboot and if you want to run a last Malwarebytes scan to ensure you are clean.

    Thanks to evilsatan

I'm not sure on the merits of my system over AdwCleaner, Rkill terminates any malicious processes that are running on your machine that could interfere with scanning utilities so this is a worthwhile step no matter which scanner you use. I like to use built in uninstallers before cleaning up the files.

I like your approach (much more comprehensive) and recommend it to the OP over mine!
