    Info Greetings from Helsinki

    Hello all,

Friends and foes alike call me Roger, I just joined because I'm probably one of the least tech-savvy geeks in Finland (seems as if everyone smart in this country knows how to code except me). I've studied business and worked in big corporations with SAP R/3 (payments/accounting), but that monster of a system has left me with more trauma than actual know-how - SAP is one Goliath you might do well to avoid.

My personal goal is to familiarize myself more with open source/DIY culture and hopefully one day rid myself completely of MS-dependence by way of some Linux distro. Perhaps Android might end up doing the trick for me as well (might purchase my first tablet when the Nexus 8.9 comes out), since my Galaxy SIII has made me a big fan of Android vs. iOS. But to each his own, I don't intend to partake in that debate, rather my contributions might be of better service for now in the movie review section.

Looking forward to some good discussions,
    Roger

Welcome to Digital Forums. Forum etiquette is quite high on the list here, like in real life you treat others with respect and you equally get it back. Contributing to the threads with good constructive posts gets you noticed for all the good reasons. with time your post count will go up and you will have full use of the forum. This has been put in place to stop Spammers,Leechers and generally 1 post users that want something for nothing, they try and get it and go.

Digital forums has been going years and has a large fan base. some actually pay for the privilege and they get bonuses over non sub people. With time you will build up friends and likewise you will be seen here as someone that can contribute to the DF Community.
    Enjoy your stay

Hi Roger and welcome to DF. Nice informative and polite intro. Not surprised really because everyone I have met from the Nordic countries are polite, friendly and intelligent. (">

Thanks for the warm welcome, much appreciated! I'm already trying to fight off a mild forum addiction, but this is hardly the most lethal poison to pick.

Nordic people are definitely quite diplomatic in their demeanor, but in Finland the politeness is uninspiring at best and stifling at worst. We Finns basically tend to say nothing when sober and then it all comes out when drunk - luckily the slurring usually encrypts most of the sensitive information. Then again, the formula seems to be quite universal: go out drinking, try to shag everything that moves, pick a fight with an innocent bystander after getting rejected one too many times, then lie to yourself the next day in the throes of a hangover that at least you now have a unique story to tell on your deathbed. Compared to that, I'll consider any time spent on this forum as rather productive.

    Thanks to Jonsson

I studied in the U.S. and worked there for awhile in the hospitality industry, but nowadays the minimal travel I do is for "holiday" which means sunny day-trips to Tallinn to stock up on spirits. But Finland has become increasingly international in recent years, so I've pretty much replaced my nomadic tendencies with just having more expats in my local social circles.

I'm more a bum than anything else - the last time I was on a plane was summer 2012, and Tallinn is two hours across the bay by ferry, where the savings from buying 2 litres of spirits can already recoup your travel costs. (And I mistrust all the jetsetters I know, ending up being justified in my stance at least 80% of the time.)

Nice, thanks for letting me know. A good reminder for me to refrain from ill-advised generalizations about our shared cultural heritage so as to avoid pissing in Papa Bear's porridge.
