Default So what have you done...

With the long weekend ive been reflecting a little.

In the last year a few things have moved along... so I look back and see that, in the last year, I have managed to

    - change job that will hopefully bring back a bit of work / life balance
    - completed a masters in law with a distinction

Now it may not sound like much, but im quietly very proud of myself, as it isnt always easy to push yourself and get out of a groove.

Both the academic stuff was very challenging with the previous lack of time and energy after work, and the job is relatively new and a big challenge. But it is all good.

We tend to moan about stuff that goes wrong... but what great stuff have DF brothers and sisters achieved this past year that you're proud of and would like to share?

    Thanks to Zippeyrude

Got married to my wife. Went on an amazing holiday to Italy. Fell in love with the place and could easily see myself living there.

Started trying for a family. Although we havent had much luck, and its an emotional rollercoaster - I still see it as something im proud of, being able to take the step towards becoming a parent is a big thing i reckon.

Became settled in my job. For a long time I was very unhappy on the previous ship I worked on. Now I have found a ship with a great engineer team I am learning a lot of.

Hopefully in the next 1-2 years I want to proceed to the rank of 2nd engineer, or find a shore based position.

2013 was my annus horribilis for a variety of reasons. However 2014 has been kind to me, I was promoted to Director (the youngest in the company at 37), my kids turned 1 and 3, our new house is now fully renovated and I've finally mastered German (level B2) to the extent that I can banter with people in the street.

My major ongoing challenge is remaining in good health. To that end I've completely cut out refined carbs and sugar from my diet (white poison), I'm eating more fruit and veg, cutting my meat consumption to 1 to 2 portions a week and I've taken up running and rowing. I've also overcome my fear of the quack profession, I went for a full health screen last month (all clear thank God) and although they're not cheap, I believe prevention is better than cure so I aim to have these every two years.

    Thanks to GTI

I've just embarked on a 3 year plan that will end with me selling up, leaving the UK and living in a different international City every 6 months. I say 6 months, it could be 1 month, it could be 12. Call it my Grand Tour/Retirement/Search for Shangri La.

I did the sums once and reckoned if I had £1.2k a month I could live comfortably in most of the countries in the Middle East, Asia and Latin America that are of interest to me. Now that I have kids, its no longer possible to do a Jason Bourne and just disappear.

I won't be fucking slumming it. I'm not sure how long ago you did the sums but Asian Cities in the tiger economies, such as Malaysia and Indonesia, are all steadily growing a middle class and that's only driving prices in one direction. South Amercia is the same, although they have more turbulence when it comes to economics, but that's mainly down to the West shafting them at every opportunity due to the socialist bent of the continent.

Well, it's starting out as 'Sex Tourism without borders' or 'tourisme sexuel sans frontières' if you will. Who knows how it'll end?

Oh and I forgot to mention, I'll be doing it all under the guise of [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
