Default Custom made light progress thread

As posted in my dry dock thread im working on 3 projects, a coffee table, a light stand, and a clock all from reclaimed scrap engine parts... this thread is for the light stand and ill make the others once more work progresses on them...

So far its went from this drawing in paint when I first had the idea:

To this 3D drawing I made in google sketchup...

To this: I got this back from the welders today, and filled the holes, and blending the welds using Devcon magic metal epoxy putty. Next stage, sanding to show a seamless finish, then its onto painting...

    6 Thanks given to CallmeGoose

Looks good. Are you going to paint it to cover the welds or leaving it with the natural look? Also how are you attaching the lights?

Bet that weighs a good few kilos !!

At least if you get burgled they won't be running down the street with it, they wouldn't make it far lol

Edit: Out of curiosity how much did the welding set you back ?

it was looking pretty good until you mentioned the fairly lights.....

couldnt you fit some sort of LED light fitting in every 3rd or 4th hole, alternating the direction they point?

this is what I wanted to do but there would be too many wires all over it

I bought some recently for the kitchen, very simple to install (replaced some down lights under the cupboards).
But as an alternative to the remote, you can get these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/iOS-iPhone...item2a33f0e1ee

This needs Decking Lights. Not cheap, but added bonus, water/weather proof. Use in the garden in the Summer, in the house in the winter. Win, Win.

The thing is , the holes are 16mm wide, and about 6mm depth. The maximum I would want the lights sticking out by are 10mm otherwise it would just look stupid.

With individual lights, there are going to be wires trailing everywhere.....

With a flexible adhesive strip, the spacing between the centres of the holes is approx 34mm... Anymore or anyone's and the LEDs will be offset from the holes..

Something in this style, although not push button and lower profile would be ideal

Must admit I thought you had the LED tape in mind when you were in the design stage. The other option is the LED's hard wired (Let's be honest we are talking about 2 very small single cables here) you could make a very neat job of making them into a nice neat line from one light to the next. You could use hot glue to hold the cables in place....you could even cover the two cables in a sleeve to make it just 1 single two core cable...glued out of sight. I can't help thinking fairy lights will kill the look of what you have created. FWIW I wouldn't be getting the RGB LED's I would go for either the cool or warm white...the effect on that polished materiel would be stunning IMHO.

These would be ideal and easy to wire up but are prohibitively expensive at £22 each. http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/visible-leds/7336343/

These are much cheaper but the light is yellow. Should still be relatively easy to wire up. http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/visible-leds/7192358/

These would be ideal for less than a fiver but as far as I can see are only available in invisible IR light. http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/ir-led...633D4E4F4E4526

Gives you an idea of the different packages you can get them in so well worth having a look around. Could even bend a metal or plastic tube to follow the contours at the back and run any wires through that. Could be painted the same colour and look a lot more acceptable than seeing the wiring. Could also mount LED's on the metal/plastic tube and have them protrude through the holes in the main structure. (">

Search google for Helixeon here they are on ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3x-High-Po...-/270822284753
I like Bigbirds suggestion about some sort of silver tubing following the contours. Im sure you could get a suitable system to make these a good way to go. You would also need a driver (Basically a transformer) and you would be all set.

Cheers lads. Some fantastic suggestions. I've moved away from the fairy lights and no matter how long it takes to find something suitable I'll avoid fairy lights at all costs as you are right, it will spoil the look. I'll check those links out now

I could bend a length of copper tubing to sit flush with the curve of the light to allow the wires to run through.

I like the look of the first set of LEDs you linked to big bird but very expensive.

The second set would be ideal... I might order a few of those and see what they are like

Clas Ohlson do 10mm leds in Ultra White @ £5.99 for a pack of 5: http://www.clasohlson.com/uk/10-mm-LEDs/Pr363845000

Here is a page that someone else has put up about these: http://hblok.net/blog/posts/2013/06/...ght-10-mm-led/

Shape a tube to follow the contours at the back of the lamp. Hold it in place and drill holes where required. Mount the leds on the tube with the wiring inside the tube. Only problem is that the tube will cover the back of the unused holes so they wont be see through which I think would ruin the asthetics od the structure. As DavidF said "we are talking about 2 very small single cables here" so no real need for the tube. Unless you mount the tube to one side of the holes and bent the led wires through 90 deg to sit in the holes of the structure. (">

Your choice of leds depends on how much light you want from this lamp? (">
