Info New monitor, video not so smooth...what to upgrade...?

Just got a 27" 2560 x 1440 resolution monitor and loving the inches more than Pamela Anderson, but, I have found that running 1080p and some higher bitrate 720p videos isn't as smooth as it should be. My mobo is old and only supports PCIe v1.1, so this could be the reason, after reading up earlier it seems that v1.1 motherboards will handle almost any spec graphics card but obviously throttle the data throughput to its own limitations. I initially thought my graphics card was the issue, since its nowt special (Radeon 6450) but its not so old so it may not be the cause of the problem. Can anyone direct me in my spending direction? I was about to buy a Radeon 7970 for around £120, which is supposed to be 'ok' for gaming at this resolution, but I would imagine that running HD video is a breeze compared to running games, so maybe my gfx card is upto the job and its the mobo thats the issue.I do plan to upgrade the rest of the system eventually, the Core2duo 3ghz I have doesn't carry many bragging rights these days.

Is the video running from a local drive or networked drive? Have you considered plugins being a potential problem? What are you using to play the video?

    Thanks to evilsatan

A local drive, and I can stream the same media to my telly in the bedroom over wifi without issues.

Player: I currently use MPC HC and VLC, both arent as smooth as when I was running a lower res monitor.

Tbh I wouldn't have thought the GPU would bottleneck on HD video but obviously something is causing it if the same setup played fine on a lower res. I assume you have updated your graphics drivers? Have you tried decreasing the resolution to see if that helps?

actually, I never thought of lowering the res, duh...i'll try that tonight. If it does fix the problem, what would that tell me about whats causing the issue?

Well I haven't looked into this specifically before but I would imagine higher res means more data so we would look for bottlenecks. I think the newer the version of HDMI, the higher the bandwidth, hence 1.4 is needed for 3d. But it could be your PCI lanes. A gamer would be better suited to answering this question but I will try my best!

According to AMD, the 6450 hdmi port has a 'max resolution of 1920x1200'. I've tested the 6450 card on a (much) lower spec system @ 1080p with bluray 3D movies & I didn't notice any issues with the playback. Have you tried the DVI port? How much strain is the cpu put under during playback?

£120 for the HD 7970 is a bargain. If you don't want it, I'll have it

I wouldn't update your hardware just to get videos running smoother. Improve your codecs. I have found in the past that VLC isn't the most efficient video player for hi def videos, try using CoreAVC. I've used this on older laptops using VLC that have struggled to play full HD movies. Installed CoreAVC and they worked perfectly. CoreAVC means that you'll watch videos using WMP.

I am using DVI, DVI dual or something which the monitor requires to run at this resolution. To be honest I was fully expecting the monitor to require a better card to even run, so I am not surprised theres a few issues.

Just tested the resolution and dropping to 1080p still seems choppy, dropping to 800 vertical pixels (pretty much the same as my old screen) restores smoothness though.

Also tried switching to CoreAVC and it doesnt seem to make matters better, it seems to increase the load on the CPU and the system becomes very sluggish, I'll try adjusting the settings tomorrow, its time for bed.
