Default Thinking about replacing Revo with Roku?

I've been using a Revo for playing films since the first R3600 and am now using a R3700. Whilst I love it and it works brilliantly with Plex I have been thinking that I could sell it and buy a Roku 3 or something like the new Amazon box. Benifits are that it's not a full OS, silent and the remote makes it very easy to use for everyone.

Has anyone else made the switch or thinking along the same lines as me? The most important thing is that the device has to be able to natively play ALL my mkvs and no transcoding, and pass through the Hd audio to my amp.

    Thoughts?

I thought Plex had to transcode when streaming to a Roku/Now TV box etc.... ?

I am a hoarder when it comes to this stuff. My server is a Mac Mini, I have everything on my NSA310 and I use an Apple TV in the bedroom, Samsung TV does media playback in the front room a cheap 32" Smart TV in the back room again does it all automagically plus have a Now TV, Hisense box, Raspberry Pi taking up drawer space until I find a use for them.

Unless you need the other features of a Roku or the likes (I do think I will grab an Amazon Fire TV for Gaming) I cannot recommend a SMART TV enough. The only fault with the Samsung is that you can lose the ability to fastforward/rewind on some formats. However you can time skip easily enough and very quickly, plus it has not failed to play anything back yet.

I have toyed with the idea, but have stuck with my Revo's as I use MythTV. None of my TV's have aerial or Sat boxes connected to them, so full PC is essential for me.
I subscribe to Netflix but have got this working under Linux now so happy there, and XBMC covers all my needs for iPlayer etc.
Might get hold of a Chromecast for BT Sport though.

I've got a raspberry pi running rasplex for my clients. Silent, cheap and the misses can drive it using the TV remote using cec. Works a treat.

I would love a new Samsung TV that has the Plex app built in but no way could I afford at the moment. Selling the Revo would pay for a Roku 3 which shouldn't need to do any transcoding like the NowTV box does as it can play everything natively. In the past i've preferred the PC as it will literally play anything you throw at it but with the new Amazon box and these Roku's a full blown PC isn't needed.

I tested a Chromecast at the weekend and liked it but I don't have enough HDMI ports on my amp for it, and using it in the ports on the TV and then audio via phono cables to the Amp wasn't very good which is what got me thinking.

edit a Pi would be no good as i'd need to Transcode which I don't want to do. Whatever I do it HAS to play direct from the Plex server.

Funnily enough Tescos are doing 12 months free credit on new TVs so I'm getting a 46" Samsung tomorrow. Will give the Plex app a try. If I can use that and sell the revo and sound bar that comes with the tv for free I'll have a few hundred quid spare

The Samsung app works well for me both local and remote viewing.

Good thing about NowTV is you can get it on the PS3 and I've got 2 boxes as well.

If your thinking of replacing your Revo, I'd probably suggest an Android TV Box over a Roku 3. Especially now that MX Linux is available and boots direct into XBMC.

There is also a hell of a difference in performance between an Android TV Box running XBMC and an MX Linux Box. Mate of mine has one and I'm even considering it myself.
The only reason I haven't yet is because I'm fixed up with Plex ATM and everything works perfectly.

    Thanks to DejaVu
