Default recommend me a nas enclosure.

Looking for a NAS for running plex on. would like to start at 4TB but have a 4 bay so i can build up to 16TB as and when i need more space.

Going to want to be able to run sabnzbd, couch potato and NZBdrone on it too.

im not wanting to spend more than £150 for the enclosure or £250 all in.

Personally for that cash I'd buy a HP microserver and fill it with disks.

Will that Nas have the processing power to transcode plex streams?

    Thanks to beerman

reading around and it wont be able to transcode well enough. so would only be good enough for storage.
good have a look at HP microserver.

Bought a HP microserver (N54L) during the last cashback offer for the purpose of running plex and it works a treat.

Use a nowTV box to stream to the TV, use the chrome app when i want to watch something on the works PC and the android app when waiting in the car, and i cant fault it.

Dont use nzbdrone as i use sickbeard and it has never let me down. This is all set up using Freenas.

I just had a quick look on hotdeals and it looks like the usual microserver cashback offer isn't on. Looks like they are offering cashback if you buy a Server OS only.

    Thanks to beerman

if i'm looking right it only puts 1 hard drive in the microserver and its around £250, that wouldn't fulfill my Hdd capacity that id like.

Might just get it for it capacity and just carry on using my pc as the plex server.

seems the better option rather than spend lots on something that can transcode

If you can wait for the next hp cashback offer its another vote for hp n54L. With minimum effort you can run 5 disks (one in DVD slot for os). Mine currently has server 2012 r2 and runs plex, couch potato, nzb drone.

The official specs say max 8GB ram but is it commonly known that it will run 16GB. As for hard drives, HP say max 4x 2TB but again there are many running 4x 4TB.

Mine currently has 2x3TB western digital red drives (and 2 random discs I had laying around) and will get another 2 when finances allow.

I have 16gb running in my n40 and running 3tb red drives in it although it will take 4tb drives no problems.

Cashback offer seems to happen every 3 months or so, they do it quite regularly.

Your budget is a bit low mate, cheapest 3TB WD Red HDD is £90ish. Afaik if you want it to run those apps you will be looking at netgear readynas or a Microserver. I wasn't sure if apps were out for the qnap or Synology.

I'll be picking up another microserver when the cashback is next on. A great purchase.

They are probably the best value and are the most versatile. My ReadyNAS ultra 4 was quite expensive and I got a discount for being a power shift partner as long as it was used by me and not sold on within 12 months. Unfortunately that scheme is no longer valid so I can now borrow any readynas to test but that's it.

I'm sorting a few things in the house and getting a holiday out the way however am steadily saving for a HPmicro server with a few HDD.
I will get it when the cash back is on.
I do however frequently check gumtree and fleabay for the odd bargain.
