microsoft Microsoft to drop Xbox Gold charge for Netflix, Hulu and other apps

Microsoft has confirmed that it's doing away with Xbox Gold subscription requirements for Netflix, Hulu and other streaming media apps, confirming rumours from insiders close to Ars Technica earlier today.

    Updated:
Microsoft has confirmed in a post on Xbox Wire that it will indeed allow users to access entertainment apps on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One regardless of whether they have an Xbox Live Gold subscription or not. "Xbox 360 has been a leader in delivering entertainment experiences for years, with over 170 global entertainment apps and experiences available today," the post read. "We're constantly adding new partners and experiences to the growing catalog on Xbox One. Coming in June, anyone with an Xbox will be able to access popular entertainment experiences - whether or not you have an Xbox Live Gold membership.

"This includes great gaming apps like Machinima, Twitch and Upload, popular video services like Netflix, Univision Deportes, GoPro, Red Bull TV and HBO GO, sports experiences like the NFL app for Xbox One, MLB.TV, NBA Game Time, NHL Game Center and more. Microsoft experiences including Internet Explorer, Skype, OneDrive and OneGuide will also be available to all Xbox customers."

Original story: The information has apparently come to light thanks to "ongoing discussions about the company's announcements" at E3 in June, and is said to be linked to the departure of former interactive entertainment business president Don Mattrick last year. Nothing has been finalised for the moment, and Microsoft has yet to comment on the report.

It's not clear whether the apps that might become Gold-exclusive are new, unreleased apps or existing ones. Any thoughts on what you might be prepared to pay for, in return for free Netflix?

About time. This means I can give my old xbox to my mum and she can watch iplayer and 4od downstairs (and more importantly I can play xbox when I go visit).
Just seems like there were twats in the first place having this system in place. Kind of like playstations attitute towards this more than msoft.

I see this as a positive, they recognised that it didn't make sense to only allow access to apps that could be used for free elsewhere and changed. Win win.

    Got this in an email...

Entertainment apps no longer require Xbox Live Gold, and Games with Gold comes to Xbox One.

    Important changes coming

At Xbox, we’re committed to continually improving the Xbox experience based on your feedback. Today we’re announcing two changes that you have asked for.

In June, we’re making Xbox Live Gold even better. Games with Gold will be coming to Xbox One, so a single Gold membership will get you access to games on both Xbox One and Xbox 360. In addition, we’re introducing Deals with Gold for Xbox One which gives members exclusive discounts on games and content in the Xbox Store. With the most advanced multiplayer, Games with Gold, and Deals with Gold, Xbox Live Gold is better than ever.

Also coming in June, all Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners will get access to popular entertainment apps on Xbox without needing an Xbox Live Gold membership*. This means that everyone can enjoy the amazing gaming, TV and entertainment experiences that Xbox has to offer, right out of the box.

*For the latest information and timing, see FAQ. Some apps may require app provider-specific subscriptions and/or additional requirements. Multiplayer between Xbox 360 and Xbox One not supported. Games With Gold: For paid-up Gold members only. On Xbox One, active Gold membership required to play the games you’ve downloaded.

More info below - bout time they gave some good news to xbox one users

Microsoft's Games with Gold program will be available for Xbox One in June, while current Xbox Live Gold subscribers will receive an extra free game and additional discounts, head of Xbox Phil Spencer [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] today.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] is a program that gifts two free games a month to Xbox Live Gold subscribers. The Xbox One edition of the program kicks off with Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and Halo: Spartan Assault. Deals with Gold also launches in June and will save members money on Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome "and a few other surprises." The announcement adds that members will now have "subscription-based access" to these games; this suggests that the service will function more like Sony's PlayStation Plus program.
"In the coming months, we will offer significant savings of up to 50 - 75 percent off certain titles," Spencer wrote. "This program will continue to be available for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox 360. And new on Xbox One, we will launch a virtual VIP room exclusive to Xbox Live Gold members where we will feature free games, monthly deals, and other great benefits."
One membership is valid for both the Xbox One and Xbox 360.
In honor of the program's one-year anniversary, Xbox 360 owners can pick up an extra game in June — Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition — in addition to Dark Souls andCharlie Murder.
Spencer added that in June, Xbox owners will have access to "popular entertainment experiences" with or without a Gold subscription.
"This includes great gaming apps like Machinima, Twitch and Upload, popular video services like Netflix, Univision Deportes, GoPro, Red Bull TV and HBO GO, sports experiences like the NFL app for Xbox One, MLB.TV, NBA Game Time, NHL Game Center and more," Spencer wrote. "Microsoft experiences including Internet Explorer, Skype, OneDrive and OneGuide will also be available to all Xbox customers."
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ], rumors surfaced that Microsoft was planning to remove its paywall for streaming media such as Netflix and Hulu.
