Default Removing baked on bugs from black paintwork......

Need some help with a baked on bug problem.

Had some small flies land on the car a couple of weeks ago at work and didn't pay much attention to them, just decided they would come off as usual after a good clean..... Got it jet washed as usual and the remains of the flies have stuck to the car, I mean stuck. They look like little blobs of dried glue all over the roof.....

    So far I have tried....
    1. Another wash leaving on the soap for 10 mins then jetting off. No good
    2. WD40 and a soft rag. No good.
    3. Neat car shampoo leave for 10 mins. No good
    4. Damp tumble drier sheet. Takes off the "raised" textured part of the fly eventually but leaves a mark.
    5. Auto glym bug remover. Eventually removes some of the fly
    6. Wet towel laid over the bugs then wipe off. No good
    7. Isopropyl alcohol. Eventually removes some of the fly

Need some recommendation for what else to try to get this dead stuff off the car.....

Don't really want to resort to a scouring pad or an angle grinder but this stuff just won't shift..... I have seen a lot of people say a clay bar kit takes all the muck off but I can't see it working as this stuff is like hardened glue....
Some say coke might work but could damage the paint.

    So any good advice

I use a finishing kit from Autoglym and it does the job http://www.amazon.co.uk/Autoglym-Sur...words=autoglym

    Brings off tar as well...

    Thanks to chesser

That stuff looks like it could be nasty. The reviews seem to say it's good for tar and bug splatter but not so sure on baked in bugs...... Will do some more checking

Only in Britain….do we use the word “politics” to describe the process of Government. “Poli” in Latin meaning “many” and “tics” meaning “bloodsucking
    creatures”

for bugs either a citrus based product or product like tardis will do the job spot on,

it removes 1 week old 100mph french bugs that have been sun baked on no problem

    Thanks to Mobileman

I would use T-Cut* or claybar* followed by a buff.

Both of these products are actually very fine abrasives that will let you basically sand through the affected paint.

With T-Cut once you're finished, the car's ready. With clay bar, I've always needed to buff the paint back to a nice shine.

    * T-Cut is normally despised by most people in the car detailing world because of it's abrasive properties. Clay bar seems to be greatly preferred, but on the couple of times I've used it, it did the trick but the paint lost it's shininess so then needed to be buffed to restore this - the only way I can understand this is if the clay bar is even more abrasive which doesn't fit in with conventional wisdom. If you don't know what you are doing with a buffer it's very easy to burn paint.

    Thanks to Over Carl

Tried that this afternoon. The guys even did it again and let it soak for a couple of minutes the second time but it made no difference.

Looks like I'll have to try this Tardis stuff and maybe the clay.......

Use both, the tardis will take off shit you didn't realise was there, then the clay will take off more and leave the paint smooth as glass.
Make sure you have the order correct though.
    -Tardis
    -Wash
    -Clay
-Wash (with fresh water and wash mix)
-Polish (If you want, can be skipped)
    -Glaze
-Wax/Sealant (will help to prevent stuff from bonding to the paint in future)

    Thanks to super mike

wash with traffic film remover, then wash with out, dry car off then get some intensive tar and glue remover apply with cloth [ not soft ] over the affected area in a circular motion, wash car with traffic film remover to get rid of all residue ect then polish

    Thanks to ganjaman2

Well, It's kind of done the job..... The shit on the surface has gone and the paintwork feels silky smooth to the touch now but even after a coat of the resin polish you can still easily see where the remains of the bugs were.

Unless anyone can point my in another direction, I'm gonna assume the bug matter has eaten partially through the top/clear coat. I did some googling and it appears Honda Civics(and Honda's in general) have very thin top/clear coats applied and bugs, tree sap, bird poo etc need to be removed a.s.a.p.

Any other advice or do I have to concede defeat and live with it or re-spary it?? The only other thing I might try is the buffer that over carl mentioned.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but Honda paint is very soft so yeah bugs and bird poo will mark it quite easily. it also marks quite easily under the sun.

    My method would have been
foam wash to soften everything up
    jetwash off
    bucket wash
spray the bugs with 1Z or if I had ran out Tardis (which I have loads of)
    wash again
clay (its not abrasive but can induce marring if not used correctly and needs polishing after) even the Bilt hamber clay that says can be used with water I always use something else that is more lubricated
That should get shut of everything other than tar which is where the tardis comes in.

never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!

Thanks Little John.. Got all the little bugs off now. What a pain in the ass it was and I must say Honda paint is ridiculously soft.....

I finally used Bucket wash with some dodo juice
A good helping of Autoglym bug remover allowed to soak for 10 mins then wiped off with a microfibre cloth
    Another wash
    Claybar and lubricant
    Another wash
Resin polish applied with a polishing wheel
    2 coats of wax

Even now the bugs have gone but you can still make out the discolouration where they were. Still cheaper than a respray........
