when does warranty start?

Scenario - lets say an iphone was purchased from a highstreet mobile (o2 etc) shop a few months ago but the sealed box was never opened

Question - What are the timeframes for the warranty?

I expect the mobile company to say 12 months from date of purchase, but is the apple warranty different? i.e. does this start from date of registration?

As I understand it the reseller, ie O2, registers the serial number with Apple as sold on a certain date and that is the effective commencement of the warranty.
I bought my macbook from a reseller and that's how he did it..
This gives Apple a measure of control over who sells their kit too
