Review What was the last "GOOD" movie you watched and why?

Carrying on from some of the recent movie reviews, where some movies are getting really bad to average only ratings from members...

What was the last really good film you saw.

Be interesting to see how many people name a new(ish) film, as IMO most modern films are terrible. Either remakes, follow ups or randomly shit.

    Dredd (2012)

I wasn't expecting much from this, the 1995 Stallone version was piss poor. I spent a big chunk of my youth reading Starlord and 2000AD comics before I progressed to Marvel. Judge Dredd was one of those seminal characters that never quite left my memory, along with the ABC warriors and Rogue Trooper. They were British SiFi comic hero's at there best, dark, moody and odd. This film keeps the faith. The biggest homage to the original comic is the fact that Dredd DOES NOT REMOVE HIS HELMET unlike the Stallone incarnation. The film nails the grimy, gritty way of life that is Mega City One. I get the feeling the budget wasn't phenomenal for this film so they had to make the best with what they had, so it's not been destroyed with an over the top reliance on CGI. If your a 2000AD fan then your love it, if you just need a quick SiFi fix then you could do a lot worse.

Argo was not bad for a quiet film. Enjoyed Desolation of Smaug (better than the first instalment by quite a bit) as much as any tolkein fan can enjoy a Peter Jackson adaptation.

I watched the Emperors New Groove on Saturday and it was the best film I've watched in ages. No joke.

Other than that, its just pish film after pish film these days.

Ooh, Berandal was good if you enjoyed The Raid.

I really enjoyed the railway man and saving mr banks. I did not really want to see either of them but both are fantastic films and are highly recommended.

Rush as above. Not liked F1 for years but always liked hunt and lauda. Very well acted by both main characters and the story was very well told.

HER was the last decent film, yes sad to say but I found this film weirdly good!

Gravity = Overhyped and not just far fetched but light year fetched!
12 Years a slave = Overhyped and the way he just forgot about the young black lass done my nut in!
Non Stop = Ok but even though I guessed every single person on the plane was the baddie the ending wasn't as good as the film deserved!

Quite a few others and will be watching 13 sins on Wednesday when my son decides to get his arse home!

Me and my son watch quite a lot of films and the one we class as the worst is the remake of Brighton Rock, started good but OMG was it boring! The one i want to see again is Now You See Me, seen it at the cinema but don't really enjoy them as much as at home.

One of the best films you should watch is Battle Royale, its in Japanese but a very good film, BR2 also. Also another must see Japanese film is Death Note, trust me watch them they are very good.

Olympus has fallen. Nothing that hasn't been done before, but Gerrard Butler is nails,
The new Jack Ryan was pretty good too. Good Story and is a prequel to Patriot games

Old Boy [2013] - Liked the original Korean version and liked the remake just as much. Solid performance from Josh Brolin [looking forward to seeing him in Sin City 2]. I still can't make my mind up whether I liked Sharlto Copley in this movie or not. I'll decide the second time around.

Open Grave [2013] - Sharlto Copley again who I think will do really well if he chooses the right films, I really liked him in District 9 [!!Fucking Prawn!!]. I really liked this film, kept me guessing for a while and it was different. Do yourself a favour though, if you're going to watch it, don't YouTube for the trailer, don't Google or IMDB it, if you like horror then just watch it!

Drive [2011] - Not the best plot or the best script but a piece of cinematographic genius with a great 80s soundtrack. I'm hopeful for 'Driven' if Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn. And don't be put off if you think Gosling is just an annoying shirt lifter. He played a good part in Murder by Numbers with Sandra Bullock [2002] and he delivers a steller performance in this, and also.......

Only God Forgives [2013] - Same lead actor, same director, same amazing cinematography. A brutal yet beautiful film. Not as good as Drive but worth a watch if you have some appreciation for that kind of thing - occasionally I do

300 [2006] - Watched in preperation for the sequel. Brilliant from start to finish.

Basic Instinct [1992] - Great classic sexy suspense thriller. Oh, and Sharon Stone is in it

Day of the Dead [1985] - I'm a big zombie fan and usually squeeze one of these in somewhere during the week. Arguably one of the best zombies films ever made, mainly down to Romero's direction and Tom Savini / Greg Nicotaro's special effects. It will always be a crying shame that Romero couldn't secure the funding he wanted originally as he had a much much bigger film planned, could have been epic

I get through a fair bit of Sky News and films throughout the week and the weekend. I've also watched a lot of shite but that sums up the best of the bunch during the past week. Drive I watched twice.

I quite fancy Godzilla to watch with my son. I've stayed away from the trailer so far but I've heard the CGi is supposed to be deliciously spectacular!

The last film I really loved was gravity but I am a scifi whore.
Before that was probably Star Trek into darkness and before that Star Trek or Moon.

Only God Forgives really surprised me, didn't expect to like it but found it really we'll shot and atmospheric. It's a real marmite movie, the user reviews on imdb are a real mix from 1 star to 10 stars. The missus found it dull.

Wolf of Wall Street - very similar to Goodfellas in structure and very funny. Also saw The Raid 2 a while back. Not as bonkers as the first but still very good.

The last film that I really enjoyed watching was the untouchables, was on sly movies last week. This film has some really good directed scenes, yhose of you who havent seen tbe movie youthbe the untouchables train station scene,

This movie also appealed well to my other family members becuase it didnt contain a high level of violence, nudity and swearing jist very minor swearing with a couple of violence here and there,

Elliot ness role was well suited, and robert de Niro was outstanding in his performance

I'd recommend this movie to anyone who wants a nice pleasant way of ending an evening with a mature family

Cheap Thrills was quite entertaining, bit different to the usual.
If nature always takes the easiest route, what's easier...?
The creation of billions of galaxies each containing trillions of stars each with their own solar systems, some with planets that have evolved civilisations with billions of different life forms. OR The creation of just your imagination?

    I quite enjoyed 7 Psychopaths.
Knew nothing about the film and was pleasantly surprised.
