    gamehelp MAME fullset

whats the easiest method of putting a full set of roms together? I see that packs on usenet are tagged with the mame version (147U4 for example)

I can't seem to find any packs relating to the latest version (
    148u5)?

Also is it worth getting the CHDs and laserdisk roms?

I basically want a full set of everything, space is not an issue

    any advice appreciated!

What did you find? I got asked to do the same thing for a mate. I've downloaded mame set 143 of usenet and the matching emu but where to go from there?

I have a spare 1TB and I've run out of things to download, whats the current size of a full romset these days? How new are the latest roms?

The latest romset is from Jan this year. I'm not sure how up to date the games are though as I know that sometimes they change the format of the roms in the romset. So the latest updates may not necessarily add any games... The rom pack I downloaded is around 30GB.

The CHDs look like they could be massive though. The CHD for Area51 on that site look like 2GB of rars just for that one game. If there are a lot of games similar size they might seriously eat into 1TB..

    Thanks to Mr.James

about the same time since i really used it too, we played it a fair bit on the old xbox.

If I search on usenet for mame it brings up a myriad of meaningless shite, does each update include all the roms available, or just updates/revisions to an existing romset? ie, if I grab 148u5, will I get everything there is to get?

also, are the CHDs really worth the hassle?

the set there, although its passworded looks pretty heavy!

I'm in the middle of pulling everything off that site, I will let you know what total is

Personally I wouldn't bother with usenet, they are all old packs, passworded or incomplete - would be a nightmare I imagine

been grabbing 147u3 all day today, will be done by t'moro morning I expect. I think it clocked in at 30gig without the CHDs.

The set I'm grabbing comes with a par to check your DL too, so I thought what the hell.

just added the CHDs which I think has added about 290gig to the total. If they all come down ok I'll chuck up some .nzbs

whats the app to check your roms? I remember using one when I was downloading snes roms on 56k

    apparently this is the best:

    http://mamedev.emulab.it/clrmamepro/

but can I hell figure out how to use it

I use goodtools / goodgui for console roms but it does not have mame support yet

I tried that clrmamepro on a dozen or so ROMs to test. It fucked them all up.

Originally they all played OK but were reported by clr that rom files inside the zips weren't named properly or were missing. After 'fixing' it had created the ones that were missing inside the zips and renamed some of the roms but after re-checking they all came up as corrupt/damaged.

Maybe it was down to me running it without it being a full mame set but make sure you backup your set before running it.

    Thanks to Mr.James

After playing with it I'm not sure what use clr is to be honest. From what I gather it's for matching your rom set to your emulator. But surely it's just easier to match your emulator to your romset? All previous versions are available off the mame websites...

clrmame pro has been the go to app for years and years. It will usually successfully swap roms between (almost) any version - subject to use of the correct .dat file for the version of mame you have.

so from what has been said here, you need to update your roms (rename etc) every time a new mame version comes out (using clrmame pro)?

My roms are apparently 0.147u3, my chd files are 0.148U1 and the current mame.exe is 0.148b, so I need to bring them all into alignment?

From what I understand, all you need to do is copy the update pack over the top of your mame set and upgrade your emulator. No need for clrmamepro.

Yeah you need to bring them all into alignment for them to work correctly.

I found this guide earlier, not sure how relevant it is today as its obviously a few years old. I havnt got all the roms yet, its still chewing through some of those CHDs so I havnt tried anything yet.
