    Default Working out muscle mass

    Hi all

Was weighed back in March when I started a new gym, was 13st 2oz with a body fat percentage of 29.7 and my BMI was 28.1

Have been working out 3-5 times a week since then, doing a good mix of free weights and cardio, my diet admittedly hasn't been the best but its not been too bad, I have cut out a lot of the shit I used to eat.

Anyways got weighed again this week and I have put on a stone so now I'm currently 14st 3oz, but my body fat percentage is down to 23.7% and my BMI is up to 29.8

I know I have put on a bit of muscle as I can see my body changing and my clothes are getting loose/tight in the right places, but I'm not sure how much of what I put on was muscle and what was fat.

Im not expecting to have put on a stone of muscle, but was wondering how I can work out my muscle mass?

    Thanks

    Scottio

No idea how to work it out mate, but it may be worthwhile getting yourself a set of biometric scales for the future.

I got a biometric tester thing from Tesco pharmacy for £10 which gives every stat you mention.

I've no idea how accurate it is bit you can see trends like muscle percentage growing, body fat lowering etc.

The best advice is to ignore BMI. It means fuck all.

Most professional athlete in the world would be either overweight or obese under the BMI guidelines.

Don't worry about it. The important thing is that your body fat percentage is going in the right direction and your clothes are fitting in the right places. Remember that for the same volume muscle weighs more than fat because it is more dense. (">

It's percentage - so before your body was x percent fat of whatever weight, now it's y percent fat of new weight, difference should be muscle.

I should add that wont be 100% accurate as there will be extra blood etc in the extra muscle but will give you a pretty good idea.

If you have gained a stone then you are clearly in a calorie surplus.

As you are new to training, you would have put on some muscle and lost some weight in others areas.

You'll find the majority of weight percentage calculators are highly innacurate. Go by the mirror.

If I was in your position I would nail my diet and the weight will fall off.
