Never saw the point we only get stuff air few times a year. You can buy units pretty cheap these days if you can be arsed.

There's nothing like the feeling of walking in to the bedroom when you've had the AC cooling it for 20 minutes. However dont sleep with it on all night or your throat will feel dryer than Thatcher's clunge. Set the timer to switch it off 30 minutes after you get to bed so you sleep easy. If it gets hot enough to wake u, another 30 minute blast and you're good again. This will save on electricity and prevent aforementioned dry throat.

I have fixed AC units in every room...then again we do get 6 months of 25 C plus a year averaging 32+ in peak summer

I have but then I am in the flight path of Heathrow runway 2 so opening the windows gets noisey I've only been in there a week so haven't had to turn it on yet. I'm trying to get another 2 for free from BAA (or whoever runs the scheme), one for the top floor and one for the lounge.

If you buy a decent quality evaporative unit by the likes of Convair you will be able to leave it on all night as it actually humidifies, more effective when it's not already very humid but feels gorgeous on the skin and as there is no compressor whisper quiet. . .from this page,
I have the Mastercool from this page http://www.convair.net.au/eu/product...ve-air-coolers
I paid just over £100 couple of years ago, as new from someone local.
I also have this one which heats as well as cools, is a bit more powerful and cost nearly £200 about 6 years ago
I've tried the cheaper ones but these are better in every way than all others I've tried, they have a natural 'rush' pad which the water runs through, smells like outdoors!!
They work better if drawing air from an open window but don't need exhaust like a proper refrigerating unit, the problem with those is that you have a length of blisteringly hot hose extending up through an open window effectively putting all the heat back!! I solved this in my last studio by putting it up against a hole in the studio wall and attaching the hose, much more efficient but still bloody noisy!!
    If at first you don't succeed.....redefine success. . . .

I've got a portable type one but it needs an outlet similar to a tumble dryer, impossible to sleep with it on, imagine sleeping with two hoovers next to your bed. In terms of getting the room cool though it's fantastic.

I've sometimes thought it's funny that pretty much everyone buying a new car gets aircon yet virtually no-one has ac in their houses. When I was living at my Mum's place I thought about getting aircon for there, but after doing a little homework I realise I would be a lot better off getting a proper system rather than loads of portable units. By the time I had figured that out I couldn't afford it so it never happened.

I've got a floor standing one for the last 10 years, it's great for cooling the bedroom down.

Like others have said they are noisey so not great for actually sleeping with or even trying to watch tv in bed can be difficult, it also needs a hose with a window open.

We have them in every room, but I don't live in England

A friend bought a standing unit back in blighty and I was so jealous, I think he spent over 200 on it but it was great for the 3 days it was warm.

If you can afford it, and have storage space for the 11 months you wont need it, I'd certainly consider getting one.

Even i knew this, air conditioning can be used for cooling and heating your property.

    A small extract i found:

Air conditioners not only provide cooling but, just as importantly in the Algarve's chilly winters, they provide effective heating too. Another myth is that air conditioners are an expensive way to heat – not so! In fact, using an inverter-type system is actually more cost-effective than underfloor heating. Inverter units have a COP-rating ('Coefficient Of Performance') of as much as 5, meaning that, in effect, for every euro's worth of energy you put in you get 5 euros' worth of energy out. This is much the same as an electric heat exchange water heater – not surprising, as they use similar technology.
Might sway your mind if it does both.

I just remember being in a big department store and it was sweltering. They had a huge industrial ac unit in the middle of the shop floor with the hose just lying a few meters away. I mentioned to one of the staff that it was actually going to raise the temperature as the ac system isn't 100% efficient. They just muttered on about its ac and it cools air as if I was a nutter.

Reminds me of my many visits to a small site office that was one of the basement rooms at the Savoy Hotel. There were about 30 odd people crammed in a little room each with a pc and monitor along with other IT kit.

During the summer the temps started to get high so they got portable aircon units and pointed the exhausts towards the way out. Problem was the hoses weren't long enough to even leave the room they were in. Net result of this obviously means they are actually heating the room rather than cooling it.

The bit that really shocked me was that there were about 10 engineers (electrical) in the room and none of them had bothered to think about this.

Spoke to a couple of them who didn't seem concerned so I spoke to the site manager who eventually saw my point but didn't bother trying to do anything and still left the units running.

It's amazing how people just believe what's on the label and take for granted and now we have silly things like "hot" warnings on coffee and instructions to remove steering locks before driving...

just buy a blower with the section at the back where you place ice packs, for the few weeks of heat we get its not worth going to town on a full AC system.

Buy a Convair evaporative system (as I detailed above), some can be used as heaters too some can have ice added to the water though frankly they don't need it. Portable Air-Con units can only work if vented without any of the hose exposed in the room, the trade off between radiated heat from the hose and frigid air from the front is completely unbalanced and more so as more hose is exposed. Also the Convair units are seriously quiet. . . .
