Default Sky rip off to record on box and what next?

Cancelled my Sky TV contract after finally reaching the end of it! I was offered various deals, one was to go the Freesat route via Sky but I would have to pay £25 for the card and £10 a month thereafter! Yeah cos I'm going pay £10 just to be able to record on their Sky box!

So question now is what route do I go? I don't know much if anything about these boxes were you can get all the channels based on a small fee and dont know anyone in my area who does it? I read about HD being switched off but I don't mind SD so this route would be ok with me. Or do I just go and buy a Freesat box, my son still wont be happy not having CartoonNetwork but TUFF!

    Thanks

Buy an E2 (enigma2) box and use your sky card to get the freeview channels, you maybe able to pick up a cheep box as the uk cs is about to die.

google will provide all of the info you need

    Thanks to Copex

Yup - agree with you - but the recording part of the box is a service that Sky offer which is why they stitch you for a £10 fee! Shocking really. If you want a cheap alternative a DM800. That's what I use and you can slap your $ky card in it to get the Freeview stuffs like Copex said. You will have to add your own hard drive to the box but a 2.5" SATA drive will fit nice and easily.

I agree with EvilBoB. The DM800 is prob best as it can take the hard drive internally. Bear in mind it is a single tuner box.

I use a Vu+Solo and the hard drive is external and it's a single tuner but suits my needs.

Thanks for the replies but I'm not very tech savvy when it comes to these boxes so need to ask what the difference would be buying one of the boxes mentioned or buying say a Humax Freesat box?

Your Sky+ Box has a dual tuner mate, meaning it can record one channel and record another. The Dreambox and the Vu+ Solo boxes only have a single tuner, so can only really record one thing at a time.

For me this is never really an issue as i download most of my tv shows.

Bang for buck though i would say the Dreambox is one of the better solutions .
