Help Does an S4 need a screen to power up?

    Hey guys.

Got my nephew's S4 with a destroyed screen. His mother says she only wants pics etc from it if it's not repairable.

It seems screens(+ digitizer) on these are a hell of a lot more than iphone screens so she said retrieve what you can.

So, does anyone know if they'll power on with a broken display?

ADB can't see any device, and the battery is putting out good voltage.

I was just wondering if something else is buggered, since some other devices will turn on without a screen.

    Cheers

Yes they will power on but you will only be able to access it's internal memory if they don't have a screen lock set - if they have to enter a pin or use a swipe sequence to use their phone then that has to be done before you can access the memory and you'll need the screen for that

I see. So since adb can't see it can we safely assume it's dead? He had a screen lock too.

Possibly I had the same problem with my S4 when it got run over - luckily I had lookout installed so I was able to remotely wipe it - I always set my phones to upload photos immediately to Dropbox so I never lose them and take regular backups of anything else important - too late now for you I know but if you're the techy in the family that everyone runs to this is a good to drum home the message about backing stuff up

I'm not up to speed on the S4 but on many android devices you could use a key combination on power up to put it in fastboot mode which might allow you to pull all data off the device.
