Default Broadband startup Hyperoptic hits 12,000 one gigabit per second connections

Offering speeds across London 10 times faster than nearest broadband competitors

BROADBAND STARTUP Hyperoptic is now serving 20,000 connections in London following a surge of interest in its 1Gbit/s broadband package, which provides speeds 10 times faster than those available from the major UK internet service providers (ISPs) Virgin Media and BT.

At up to 1Gbit/s, Hyperoptic's fastest broadband package offers up to around 125MB/s downloads, meaning customers will be able to download a full HD film comprising 5GB in about forty seconds.

Out of those 20,000, uptake for the firm's 1Gbit/s top speed service is around 60 percent, the firm's managing director Dana Tobak said.

"We hear of some people using the service to work from home as they get a better connection than they can get in their office," she said.

"It delivers a much better service in terms of stability without the fluctuations you can get with congested DSL networks, even if they're fibre to the cabinet."

Hyperoptic's 1Gbit/s broadband service is available for £50 per month. That's £15 more a month than Virgin's 100Mbit/s offering that presently retails for £35 a month, and £10 more than BT's 76Mbit/s Unlimited package that costs around £40 a month.

However, those not in need of such a fast broadband package can opt for Hyperoptic's more standard offerings of 20Mbit/s for £12.50 per month or 100Mbit/s for £25 per month, much cheaper than those presently available from ISPs in the UK.

Hyperoptic said it will roll out to businesses in the coming weeks, but was unable to give any more information at this time.

"Our main focus has been on resident properties but we will have our first business block online soon,"

Dunno how competitive this is though.

VirginMedia now do fibre broadband without a phone line for £22.50 a month (30mb); £27.50 a month (60mb); £35 a month (100mb). Stick another £15 on if you want a phone line.

Seems only really worth it if you go for the 1gig package.

I don't see the point in such fast internet at home TBH.

What I want is a realistic UPload speed. Not one that is a fraction of the download, for NO FUCKING GOOD REASON!!!

Well, the reason is, if people had decent upload bandwidth then ISP's would lose money from hosting. And file sharing would be mental... uncontrollable and well... good...

I know what you are saying... I just upgraded to a FTTC package and now get 20mb Upload... its usually averages just under 18 and was toying with running a low key server on it for a couple of sites.. its doable for a low use site imho

My internet is working better than usual, I have just about got, 1Mb and people are talking about 1Gb.
About 8 years ago my fixed line broadband was delivering about 6 Mb and thanks to congestion, it's now usually 0.5Mb.

I'm glad someone can get it. I tried at my old address and my new address is also a no go. I'd happily pay over the odds to get 1gb up and down but can't actually get it.
