Default Just got a Raspberry Pi, what OS for web browsing

    Hi,

Just got a Raspberry Pi which came with a couple of SD Cards (RaspBMC on one which is currently not working and another with an OS on, with lots of stuff installed which I will never use), so I want to set up the OS SD Card for my use. It will be used just for web browsing, facebook, youtube, ebay, etc.

What OS would be the easiest and quickest to set up to get us up and running?

    Thanks in advance

Any Debian based os so Ubuntu type thing. Raspian is the one most use I think. Download image from site, flash to card should just work.

Raspian is definitely the best image for the first install..

    Hi,

I have just installed Raspbian (from NOOBS), but it seems to install a lot of things we don't need as primarily I want to use it just to browse the net.

Ultimately, there are 3 uses we want it for:
    1) Web Browsing (is Chromium the best option here, and will this play videos from the web?)
    2) RaspBMC
    3) Possibly some emulation (MAME?).

I had it in my head that I would need a different SD Card set up for each of these uses, is that correct or have I got that completely wrong?

I have installed RaspBMC last night and got it set up and working pretty well with Icefilms, there is a browser that comes with it under "Programs" (ARORA?) but it seems a bit of a mess to get running as it doesn't run straight from the control panel (it closes down RaspBMC and runs the browser).

Is there a really cut down OS that would boot quicker into Chromium (if that is the best option?)

I have not looked at the game options yet, do they run from Raspbian or is it a stand alone OS like RaspBMC?

I will need the above to be used via a wireless touchpad that I am awaiting delivery of (unsure if it is Bluetooth or wifi), I will also need to connect to my wireless router so will need some form of Wifi Dongle.

Any and ALL info greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

I have been trying all day to get it to play youtube videos from a browser and other than 1 frame per 10 seconds I have had zero success. Anyone here have a solution? as everything I've tried from Google has thus far been fruitless.

If I recall, it's because the hardware acceleration isn't used for flash-based video.

I have already tried them without success, now wether the issue is that I have put so much "shit" on prior that hasn't worked and I now need to start afresh.

One other thing, should everything be SOOOOOO SLOOOOWWWWW. I mean just trying to get the search bar to allow me to type takes about 5 seconds after clicking in there, and when it does appear and I start to type it takes another 5 seconds before my typing is displayed. It's awful.

If you're willing to learn about Linux to a certain degree (not expert) then you should be able to partition the disk and use different boot loaders for each version you want.

Also I'd highly reccomend the microsd card adaptor as it prevents the sd card getting knocked and potentially damaging bits.

Overclocking is definately the way to go. I did it with mine and everything I installed became usable. Mainly use Openelec on mine these days but the new builds are quick and work well. A lot of the XBMC plugins work too - www.openelec.tv
