Default innertubes what do you recomend

I know there are a few that enjoy cycling on here and i have recently got back on the sadle, i got a cheap carera from halfords of all places with the cycle to work scheme. Was just looking at innertubes and there are loads of different brands just wondering what everyone was using and what they recomend mainly will be used on the road or down by the river so nothing too extreme. Just dont know which brands are the best.

    cheers

Whatever is cheap. We are a long way from caring about inner tube weight.

I'm currently using some specialized tubes that were 4 for £15 in a local bike shop.

Check to see if both back and front tyres are the same dimensions. Mine aren't, i went for a size that would fit both that i could carry in my pack as well as a repair kit.

Some people use latex because they are lighter, thinner and improve the ride a bit.
Latex is more pourus than butyl tubes and can lose as much as 10psi overnight. It's also more supple and resists pinch flats a bit better.

I read a study that because of the rotational mass of a latex tube compared to butyl, latex can save you up to about 2 watts of energy when maintaining a speed.

Unless you're a very good cyclist, as in one that might be expecting a phone call from Sir Dave Brailsford, I don't think there's any difference or rather not enough difference to warrant the extra cost and hassle of pumping them up before every ride.

Speaking personally, I have plenty to lose off the lmp of meat in the back of the bike before I worry about 25grammes per inner tube !

Forgot to say mine is a mtb, if yours is a racer, then they are probably going to be the same.

What sort of bike is it?

I see the Carrera is going for £242. Is it worth the asking price?

Dunno if you'd fancy it but we have just started using this stuff in our workshop and it can supposedly be used in a bike inner tube too.
It works really well in cars etc and the sales rep said he'd used it on mountain bikes and road bikes and it worked really well too.
    Cheers, Matt.

Is this advertised in-store mate? Can't see anything about it online.

I saw the mix and match offer in store and was told I couldn't get it as I got two different sizes so got three and paid then noticed online I could mix and get five for less than I paid so went back and they said they didn't know they could do that and changed them over no problems

Continental inner tubes every time. Watch out for cheap brands as very often the valve is of poor quality..

+1 for Continental tubes, also think about tyres, unless you have decent tyres, then you will still get lots of punctures.. I switched to Continental GP4000S tyres and find them amazing.. grip in the wet and roll fast in the dry (great for racing on) and have only had a small amount punctures in a couple of years.

When I lived in London I rode with the Twickenham Cycling Club. A lot of rode with Continental Gatorskins inner tubes during the winter months. Granted these tubes are used in racing bikes but the same principle can be applied to a work scheme bike. The roads can get pretty rough so look for puncture resistant tubes, does not really matter on the manufacturer. Good luck and ride safely.

The original post was from someone requesting assistance on inner tubes. My advice was not timely as I was not a member at the time of his request, however, future readers will look at this post and can gain information from it. I am a very experienced cyclist and offered information and advice gained from riding with some of the most competitive riders in the UK. Nothing I said was invalid, nor was it an attempt to run up my post count. It is an attempt to become familiar with the group and try to get friends and feel comfortable posting here. Guess I should not have posted anything in the football discussion area until I get it cleared by a moderator. If I have done anything wrong, sorry feel free to reset my post count to zero.

I needed some longer valve tubes recently as my vision team 30 wheels are quite deep profile and managed to get hold of some continental race tubes from wiggle for about £2.80 each
