I've installed but uninstalled again and I'll look into it later. Bit concerned that it says it needs location and GPS enabled for it to work so giving it a swerve for now.
google play services is always a likely contender for battery drain but is never the only one. You're far batter actually finding out what is causing the drain rather then blindly installing fixes.

The recent update for hangouts is the cause for recent battery drain problems for most devices.. google currently working on a fix

Removed hangouts from the missus phone and it fixed the battery drain issue, cheers
I've just done a factory rest direct from Sony,I don't hold out too much hope after the conversations I had today with two Three 'techies' and one Sony, brainless tossers all of them, next phone is Nexus, I'm staying as vanilla as I can get! I suppose in the meantime I'M just going to have to root this one!
This is just a Sony issue and they have confirmed a fix in June sometime, meantime go to Settings/accounts/google/ads and check opt out of interest based ads. . . . sounds like that one is worth doing anyway folks!!

It looks like it disables GPS And Services in an attempt to stop the battery drain. Nothing wrong with that but personally I'll be waiting for the final fix from Google vs a third party app workaround.
Its a Sony firmware issue, NOT Google from what I can see, the fix I posted just before your post is direct from Sony Xperia support and deals with the Google Play Services...... This is a problem with Sony's latest build of KitKat...
From what I understand, this issue affects multiple devices all running 4.4.2, i.e. Nexus 4, Samsung, Motorola and Sony.
Users of various devices have reported battery drain issues since 4.4.2 was released into the wild.
I'm still on my trusty Nexus 4 which experiences battery drain.

I'm having no such issues on my Nexus 7, on my Xperia Z i'm getting less than 50% of my usual battery life, MUCH less.
In any case the workaround suggested by Sony Support doesn't work but they have assured me that now they are aware of it there is actually a sense of urgency, no lead time though. . .just June!!
Google play services munching battery has been an issue across multiple devices and multiple generations of the os. They are trying to make the os as smart as possible but the trade off is reduced battery. All devices are subject to it but it is more noticeable on some than others.
Install better battery stats or cpu spy or similar and you will see. Time out of deep sleep is the biggest cause of battery drain when a phone is idle (i.e. screen off). Google play services, nlp and location services crop up time and time again.

That really DOESN'T explain battery life going from approaching 24 hours (Actually only ever had to charge within a day once or twice) to 7 hours immediately upon installation of the new ROM though does it? and the fact is that they have admitted there is a flaw in this build.. . . .
Before the upgrade Screen was by far the largest percentage when looking at the power management figures, now GS it sits at somewhere above 90%

My Z1 does about 2.5 days normal usage on kitkat. I fixed the battery drain by chasing down the individual wake locks without dumbing down the smart phone experience (something I would never do). The wake locks are caused mostly (but not entirely) by google play services, location services for google apps and background data for google apps.
There's another thread very similar to this where Samsung users complain kk broke their battery life so it isn't down to Sony particularly. Google optimise their shit soonest because they obviously have the code first but either the community or the other manufacturers fix things somewhere along the line.
The z1 for example is already on its third kitkat release.

Oh it's entirely about wakelocks. . . . have you rooted yours?
You're right about Google getting THEIRS right soonest for the obvious reasons but my Nexus 7 has been sweet from day one, no fixes needed which I guess is a reason for a move to the 5. . . It now looks (according to XDA) like the Nexus rage is being killed off with nothing new until next year. . . . not a lot of point in waiting for the 6 and price drop therefore of the 5!
There have been tons of fixes for nexus devices, both community fixes and official. My brother's nexus 4 was ruined by kitkat as it broke his Bluetooth and saw him jump ship to LG after successive Google nexus phones.
Yes I'm rooted and it allows the community fixes to be applied sooner rather than later.
