Info Double Sided Coin Rings project

i have seen a few videos on making coin rings

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q8aokoIH9Y

so i thought i would give it a go, so ebay i went a trolling
found a few half dollers pre 1972(more silver in them)
    a few shillings(im starting with)
    a mandrill
    soft hammer
a punch tool to make hole in centre of the coin.
if you are going to make one please make sure you buy a good stainless steel mandrill
as the 1st one i bought was listed as stainless steel but was alloy and tore up after ten minutes.
you need to anneal the coin every 5 minutes or so to keep it soft

this is as for as i have got till my new mandrill turns up

    should end up like this

    tools to get started

    will post more photos

Awesome mate. I made the wifes and mine wedding rings as at the time we were too skint to stump up for proper ones. I'll see if I can dig out some photos.

I drilled a 9mm hole in the centre of the coil then used a nylon mallet and a mandril to fold them over. I'd messed about with tap rings previously but they are a fast track to carpal tunnel syndrome and the results are much better using a mandrel.

    Thanks to losttoy

Here's the ones I have. They've pretty much worn down now over the last 4 years so there's not much of the coin lettering visible. We're ok for money now and occasionally talk about getting proper ones made but we're sentimental twats

The photo of the 3 together were just practice ones, the other two pics are the ones we still wear.

Saved a good few grand too hehe

These look pretty fucking special. There I was thinking we would settle for rainbow pencil rings, coconut rings or more likely some blocky old tungsten carbide.

Anyone fancy making me up a couple? Losttoy, your rings look particularly sleek; lovely comfortable-looking bezel.

    update
i have a few silver half dollars.
    1st go with one

marked it, cut it, started using mandrill all ok, im not sure whats going on as its started to get very hard to shape it round the mandrill
i have heated it every time its size grows, i wonder weather its been worked to much, i have a dapping dome coming soon & i hope that might bring the sides in better.
i was thinking it could even be a fake half dollar

this morning i used 1 quarter from 1999 and took me about 20 minutes to make

    From wikipedia

"In May 1969, the Treasury sought authorization to eliminate the half dollar's silver content, changing it to the same copper-nickel clad composition as the dime and quarter. The Treasury also sought approval to strike base-metal dollar coins, which would fill a need for gaming tokens in Western casinos"

Cupro-nickel coins are beasts to fold on a mandrel

EDIT: I used to file down the lip on the edge of the coin off, it takes a bit of the cone shape off. I'm tempted to get my tools back seeing you making these, bringing back memories and also making the wife go ahhh.

How much are your finger joints aching?

    Thanks to losttoy
