    Help Video stream to chrome

    Esteemed DF'ers

Some time ago I purchased a chrome-cast. I tried in vain to get the bloody thing working in my Sony amp. I plugged it into one of the HDMI input slots and can get video but no audio.. so I slung it back in the box with the realisation that my technical mojo had finally expired.. The amp is a few years old so I am working gone the assumption that it doesn't support HDMI audio.. its a sony strk880 I think.

So.. I have plugged the bloody thing into a spare hdmi in the tv and I have accepted that I wont get audio through the amp. (Unless someone can explain what I'm doing wrong). I have then tried to stream from my pc in another room to the chrome-cast in my tv.. The only app which was recommended to me was real player cloud.. but I tried streaming a HD MKV last night and it say that I need to purchase the Pro version..

Is there a way to get the HDMI working in the amp.. and is there a better free or purchase app that's better than real player or should I just pay the $49 for real player pro?

    short story long.. clearly..

I dunno about amps I'm afraid, but I send all my HD movies to the Chromecast via Plex - https://plex.tv/ If you have an Android Tablet or an iPad I would strongly recommend paying 3 quid for the app too.

    Thanks to CominAtcha

forget real player, as Cominatcha says try plex. You will however require a machine running Plex server that has access to the storage your films are on.

Plex is free on android through the Amazon app store I think, although I don't use it.
If your amp supports audio return, then any audio that the TV plays can be sent through the amp.
If nature always takes the easiest route, what's easier...?
The creation of billions of galaxies each containing trillions of stars each with their own solar systems, some with planets that have evolved civilisations with billions of different life forms. OR The creation of just your imagination?

    Thanks to Soulassassin

Awesome pal.. I have an optical in point and an optical out on the TV... I'll try it this evening when I get home.

make sure the source audio on the amp is set to hdmi, another thing to try is plugging chromecast into a hdmi slot that's working with audio,ie have you got sky tv or a games console or a bluray player conneded via hdmi with audio working, them you can make sure you haven't got a faulty chromcast, as far as im aware hdmi v 1.0 which was introduces in 2002 supported audio, so it should work

Another vote for plex, I even upgraded with plex so I could have libraries and choose who see's them e.g.
That way you can use it as a form of parental control. Just makes sure the kids can't watch your download of The Human Centipede :-)
