    Photos Notch-horned Cleg!

Notch-horned Cleg (Haematopota pluvialis) - or The Horsefly, as most know it. Unfortunately, these large flies are also haematophagous (feed on blood) and give quite painful bites. Only the female bite however, though when they do, you damn well know it, but I'm sure this is a male. Only one photo taken before it flew off into the garden next door, but it sat patiently on the end of twig until I got the lens poked in it's face. Cropped for extra impact! And so you can better see those amazing eyes!

    Cheers dude

Philg**d has been saying I should have got an MPE-65 rather than the 100L. I thought about it but if I can't hand hold already, I'm fooked with a 65. That would always need a tripod!

    Goldenorfe Phil?

I've been so tempted by the 65 on tonnes of occasions but I can't stack with the 100 at 1:1 (or slightly higher with tubes), let along a fkin 65 at 5:1 lol. Plus the lighting has to be absolutley bob on to get it to work properly. I may personally buy one in the future as aside from something like a 24-105 (to replace the 15-85), it's the only other lens I may consider at this point. However, getting my ass back over to Brazil to visit friends there is a priority on something like a 65.

ps. fwiw, I shoot with the IS on all the time.

    Thanks to dpSparhawk

Nah - Philgood on CFF (I know you don't go there now). He was good at macro, then found a load of money from somewhere and bought a 5D MkIII & a 65 and twin ringlite. Now he takes the best pictures in the Northern Hemisphere...

ahh, link me to his gallery. I stopped going to CFF due to the fact that it got to the point where some members were gaining "celeb" status and people would only comment on their images.

Shame because we had a couple of good meets.

    He doesn't use it m8.

He is on Flickr though: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

He tends to crit most other peoples images as being less good than his, and doesn't enjoy a neg reply.

I can't honestly see how the amazing shots made by you guys with the 100mm L can get any better? that's a fact.. The 65 is a feckin' monster and I've only seen it on the Lynda.com video course.
and it just strikes me as a studio setup lens.
I always use IS but still use a monopod of course as my old hands are less than steady nowadays.
I have the 24-105L incidentally Ian and love it (also the 14-70L).
Just checked out that link and yes, he is good but then so are you guys..

    Just my opinion..

keep entertaining us with your work lads..

Fantastic picture. Horrible bar-stewards though, we have lots of them due to the Roe deer roaming near where we walk our dog and they seem to bloody love my blood and leave horrid looking marks when they bite.
