WHS2011 licences are practically impossible to get online now, I tried at the start of the year and all my orders were cancelled.

    Thanks to evilsatan

Managed to get it working and all booting up.
Only problem now is it's not reading my WD RED drives but I think that's my fault they might not be pushed in properly

ESXi is not an OS, but a hypervisor that allows you to run one or more OS's as virtual machines.

It doesn't run anything as it's not an operating system.. its just a small piece of software that allows you to install several operating systems (WHS, Linux, Windows 7 etc) on one server as virtual machines.

    OK Guys

Ive been messing around so far and haven't really got anywhere.
Basically Im looking for a simple OS that will let me run PLEX and not really have any hassles from.
I toyed with the idea of using home server however with issues getting a serial and getting a stable install I am admitting defeat.
Would Windows 7 or 8 be a good server base?
Please be gentle I am coming from years on MAC and have only really been using windows for the last 8 months when I got a company laptop and the mandatory OS is Windows 7.

Any help and advice is appreciated

    Jay

Xpenology all the way, just stick DSM 5.0 gnoboot on a stick, insert the stick in the back and switch on....that easy

I've got WHs 2011 runing on my N54L.

Got it 'legit' with Daz's Loader i think. Can't remember exactly now, I 'll have to look it up again. It's very stable.

I run Plex on it and it happily sits behind the tv doing it's thing, never have to touch it really. Occasionally remote desktop into it but it's pretty seamless.
Got couchpotato and sab running too.

I was thinking about putting xpeneolgy on it as i had a synology NAS before which worked well.

Edit: Ok so i must have put WHS 2007 initially with Daz's loader, but i guess after applying various updates that have come down it's defo running WHS 2011 now.

That's what I'm looking to do.
Just down loaded freenas and may try that.

Had a synology NAS before so may try xpenology.

I edited my post jaygo as you replying. I put WHs2007 on initially using daz's loader. It's since upgraded to 2011, without fuss.

    Thanks to muttleymacclad

I must have an iso of it somewhere i'm sure. I know i've got it on a bootable usb stick. If you want i can post it to you to copy.
This is really odd. I've found an iso of WHS2011, so may be i did put that on it and use Daz's loader on it.
Half way down the first post is a link to WHS 2011
    http://forums.mydigitallife.info/thr...ver-Repository

I must have been dense because there isn't a WHS 2007. sorry.

WHS2011 is definitely activated by Daz's loader 2.2.2. and that is what i'm running.

Fella thanks for the help managed to get the version of WHS I had running and all is good.
Got Plex downloaded and got the new server name all ready to go.
    I have 1 issue however.
When I go to computer on the start menu I can't see the 3 WD RED drives I have put in.
Is it me or should I be looking elsewhere for them??
